Re: 2023 Carlisle sale entries

What date is the Carlisle sale in 2024? I have read there are always lots of Dexters for sale there?

Kind regards Nico & Annemiek

Dexter show 7 september 2024

We are planning our vacation to UK/Ireland around 7 september 2024. We would like to visit a show with lots of Dexters. Are there shows recommended around 7 september 2024. We don't have a destination yet.

Kind regards Nico Steintjes & Annemiek from Netherlands

wanted: new Red AI bull for EU-export

We are looking for fresh blood in our Dutch Dexter population.
There is plenty of black quality, but now we want some for our breeders who like reds.

So is there a red non-short bull available for Europe (Holland) ?
Or is somebody going to collect semen from a red one soon?

Re: No Dexters have 100% Complete Pedigrees back to Dublin

IMO it's important to show or lineair asses cattle. That's what they do in the UK, the Moomin herd is a good example of breeding with the breed standard and showing Dexters. On a show everyone can see what you have bred. It's one of the most worthfull things in breeding, and people in UK are very aw...

Re: Di Smith Linear

Our UK linear scheme is totally open to members who wish any of their stock to be scored, its their choice, most recognise a good animal and therefore put them forward. The next stage on is to classify whole herds and every animal but I doubt many members will go for that so we are where we are. I ...

Re: Di Smith Linear

I knew you had good cows. 3 excellent cows is fantastic. Congratulations. About the bulls: I think you are right: progeny is more important than the bull himself. But I've never seen good progeny from a poor bull. Good show results do the same thing as good lineair scores. IMO bulls never should be ...

Stargate bulls

Can anybody tell me more about STARGATE bulls ? I see a lot of them popping up in DCS bulletin. Stargate Pendragon was known, but now we have Stargate Robin the Hood, Stargate Centurian, Stargate Sorceror etc Are these bulls or parents being showed? I can't find showresults. I can't find lineair ins...

Re: Bull nose ring

Meantime I heard DCS requires a ring at 10 months and a second handler at shows.
Each show can have their own rules.

There is nothing about noserings in Eurepean law as I know, and (I think) if there is, nose rings are forbidden!

Re: Woodmagic Semen

There is no old woodmagic semen in Holland. WM Hedgehog 4th was the first Woodmagic on AI in the Netherlands. In other countrys (USA) they had WM HH 3th on AI, further I don't know. I think a member so devoted to the Woodmagic cattle should be able to get semen out of the long term society storage. ...

Re: Why I don't outwinter...

Here in Holland we had a very wet winter. No frost at all.
Most cattle are in, but 6 steers 3 bulls and 2 cows are still in the conservation area. The growing of grass has ended finally. There is not much left to eat. I'm start feeding hay-silage for 2 weeks ago.

Re: Overhieght in Dexters

I think Saffy has seen it well. In the herds without carriers you see less non-shorts with overheight. I think the bulldog gene masks the genetic heigths. The shortest short can give you very tall progeny! So I think on these animals the bulldog-gene had a bigger influence than his/her genetic heigh...

Godshill Primate E120/B

I just read in the bulletin that Godshill Primate has won the Bill Butcher Trophy for the most popular society AI Sire. I don't understand why an experimental bull (that means an upgraded bull) is used so often in the UK? You have so many excellent purebred AI bulls in the UK (Coda, Sultan, Talos, P...

Breed standard split up shorts vs. non-shorts

I think it's a good thing to split up the breed standard for shorts and non-shorts on the point of size. (for our Society Holland Dexter). At this moment the standard is 38 - 44 inch for both. My question is: what should be the measurements for shorts and non-shorts. Please use the poll and reply if...
