Re: Drought?The Weather

i have been feeding hay since mid July, along with feed blocks. My sheep were on a field away from our small holding. I brought them back on Saturday , there seemed no point in me ferrying hay round to them and the bigger problem was that the 1000 litre rain fed water system was about to run dry.. T...

Re: Sick Cow

Many years ago we had a dexter cow showing signs of cystitis. She was not as bad as you describe but clearly uncomfortable. Vet came and treated her and she was fine - never happened again. However, as you infer, it does seem to be a rare occurrence in cattle.

East Anglian Dexter Meeting at Pat Chamberlains

Hi,

Just wanted to say thanks to Pat (and Sally) for their hospitality at Hill Farm today. It is always interesting to see other peoples stock and how they are managed. Wonderful weather - a good day had by all who attended, I believe. Thank you Pat.

Re: Heifer calf born 22nd of march 2013 - can it be bulling?

Hi All Just an update - I decided not to get the vet out to estrumate immediately. I have kept a very close eye on her and have kept her away from my bull. Indeed I have been keeping her and her mum a bit like ponies - stabling at night and turning out each day. Luckily her mum has been covered by t...

Re: Heifer calf born 22nd of march 2013 - can it be bulling?

Hi, thanks for your input - I have spoken with my vet - he is of the view that she could not be pregnant at that age. He says it will do her no harm to inject her in about ten days time but he did not seem to think it would be necessary. She certainly seems to be displaying 'teenage behaviour' since...

I once had a heifer who was four months old covered by our bull - vet out - estrumated etc - bu...

Re: Schmallenberg virus (SBV)

Hi We have a deformed dexter bull calf here. He was born on 14th February - Valentine. Poor little chap appears to have a hair lip and only one formed nostril. When I first saw him it was dark and he looked perfectly normal and healthy - imagine my face the following morning? Many things raced throu...

OMG - deep commisserations - I tried that route last year, and I am still trying to catch up!! I wish you well and hope you did not do such a good job as I did!! I really wish you a speedy recovery, I hated being away from my animals. As for being 'looked after' by the two men in my life..... don't...

I guess it depends on how soft you are?? I have a cow who is 16 and owes me absolutely nothing. Last year she started to get stuck getting up, she would get her back legs up but take a while to get up on her front legs. I spoke to my vet and said I would like her to see the summer out if possible. ...

I suffer from this problem. I buy mini haylage bales, they are expensive but easy to handle and Thorogoods deliver and unload them for me. I looked into a local recycling company that left you large plastic bags to pack them in and then if you took them to their depot they charged you £5.00 per bag...

Hi Stephanie, I have put a 1988 copy of the Dexter Herd book on ebay, somehow or the other I had managed to acquire two, also a copy of The World of Dexter Cattle - the proceedings of the first world congress at NAC Stoneleigh back in August 1998, which I won in the raffle, after having purchased o...

Hi. just thought I would draw your attention to the fact that I have put a couple of surplus dexter books on ebay. I wish others would do this, as i missed a couple of 1950's herd books last week! So rare to see, even with all this time on my hands never thought to look! Jean (bored out of her brai...
