Re: First return of Dexters to Ireland

On the issue of red in North American Dexters of Woodmagic origin, I have heard, though stand to be corrected if I am wrong, that initally after the Woodmagic imports progeny which were Dun were registered as Red. Duncan Hi Duncan, The WM imports into Canada were relatively recent (1978 I think), a...

Re: First return of Dexters to Ireland

Inger, our merchandising officer, who shared in the importation of HSR4 straws, had a red calf by him first up. We were all surprised and delighted, way back then, including Carol. Margaret I bred my red cow to Hiyu SR4 for her first calf. I was so excited when she calved. It was at night and in th...

I've found a few balloons too, hung up on trees at the edge of the cow pasture. I'm in the middle-of-nowhere so finding stuff like that is always a shock. I wonder if the cows ever found any before I got there :( ..marion

Hi Inger. Yes there is a lot of variation in red and also dun. The story as I heard it, was that in the US when they got dun, they thought it was red, so as there was no way to tell what they acually were, the records for the ones registered as red were later altered to read red/dun. You can tell a...

We only assume Woodmagic Wheatear was a carrier. We can't know for sure because she hasn't been tested. If Wheatear was a carrier her dam could have been also, possibly. We presume the sire wasn't a carrier because there'd be more evidence if he was. We assume Wheatear's offspring were sired by the...

Hi Margaret, That's interesting, because I have had lots and lots of my Dexters born at 274-275 days, and a few sooner than that. If I remember correctly the longest gestation was 287..heifer from an older cow, but most just don't go as long as the tables say they should. There is of course, a lot ...
