Re: Dexter Beef Breakdown

I did join the society before I purchased my first Dexter cows, it was round about the time of the recent unpleasantries and I never got a renewal through the post so my membership naturally elapsed and I decided not to rejoin until things settled down again. I now have stock and am wondering if rej...

Re: Dexter Beef Breakdown

What I struggle with...apart from supply is the benefit of joining the society. I have seen members using the society logo and butchers selling boxes of Dexter beef with out the logo on Facebook for exactly the same price. If there is no provenance of the society and logo even as a mark of quality t...

Re: Close the discussion board?

I think closing this site would be a great loss not just to people looking for information on dexters but as a focal for fellow Dexter owners. i have found it to be a great resource for all things Dexter. The Facebook page on the other hand seems to be a list of shows punctuated by photos of anythin...

Re: Scottish Dexter Sale Lanark 2nd September

Hello Duncan i would be interested to hear if there are any Scottish breeders attending the sale and to find out at what time the sale will take place on the 2nd sept? Can I assume all cattle will need to be BVD certified? And lastly is there any plans for a sale of dexters at Carlisle this year? Ch...

Re: Dexters on TV BBC2 Friday 1st Nov 2013

Just watched landward. a good bit of publicity for the breed I thought? Especially like how the herd was changed from angus to the dexter which I found interesting. Watching the steak being cooked has also left me hungry for steak! :P

Re: Newbie

Hi clive, Dom & David Thank you for your posts. You have all made valid points. Granted when I start it will only be for private consumption, with a view that if There is the potential to generate profit (and the wife lets me) to try and sell privately to boost our income. As I feared it sounds ...

Selling to the public

Should I consider upping the numbers for selling direct to the public what is the best way to go about it? I suppose the most obvious option is to dispatch the stock myself, cut it up and wrap it but I am thinking that opens a can of worms that will involve training, specialist equipment and necessa...

Re: Newbie

Hi jac Think I will get any purchases liner tested and for genetic defects if not supplied at purchase.....mind you I will think twice about purchasing stock if there has not been some effort made by the seller to provide evidence as to the quality of their stock prior to sale especially as I now kn...

Re: Newbie

Hi Stephanie Totally agree! We have to have a seperation agreement for the show stock for the same reason so we have a couple of small fields and a few pens in a shed so any new stock/show stock are kept well away from everything else. Also we like to dose the stock for everything under the sun just...

Re: Newbie

Hi Jac I am sensing I have maybe hit a raw nerve with my last question or perhaps some frustration at the DCS either way I apologise but I may as well find out what I'm getting myself into if I go down this route! With my wife's pedigree suffs (sorry to harp on about them but they are the only curre...

Re: buying and selling

Thanks folks. Good to know that I don't need to invest in additional equipment! I have been reading some threads about dexter price and the upcoming sale and am curious what the norm is for: Buying stock Is the prefered method to buy privately or through dexter society breeding sales? Selling stock ...

Handling equipment

Do you need to get specialist handling equipment / modify existing equipment? We have good cattle handling facilities on the farm but I have only seen them being used for adult cattle. Any advice would be greatly received!
Thanks

Re: Newbie

Hi Rob Thank you for your reply. The farm is just outside Lockerbie. I had hoped to have a chat with a breeder at Dumfries show but unfortunately there was no dexter class this year. Your post is full of exactly the kind of info I'm looking for, so thanks! I had seen the BD1-N & C somewhere else...
