Re: Back on the high horse

We had a farmer at a show scoff about our Dexters, this was about ten years ago. He was not amused when I told him we get the same subsidy for our bull calves as he gets for his, but we can keep thre of four to his one charolais. We have a friend with charolais who will not eat his own beef, but lov...

Re: Back on the high horse

I take exception to the reference to smallholders. We are smallholders and are doing very well with our Dexters, thank you. We show and sell some stock, but also eat any which we consider not good enough to breed from.

calf weights

Our short legged show heifer had to have a c-section delivery early hours saturday morning. The vet tried for two hours to pull the calf but decided there was no way we could pull it. The calf arrived, I rubbed it dry with a towel and within five minutes he was trying to stand. This is a short legge...

Re: York Rare Breeds Show & Sale - 4/5th October 2013

Surely the Dexter was always known as the little black cow. If you want bigger cattle then go for bigger breeds. Why have people got Dexters if they want them bigger? It doesn't make sense to me.

Re: Disappointing

There are no auctions within easy reach of East Anglia, so our only publicity comes from showing. The public are very interested in Dexters, but most of them are just show visitors, not actually livestock keepers.

Re: Melton Mowbray Sale 14th Sept 2013

Whatever is happening at Melton, only four breeds, with a total of thirty cattle entered. Some of these will not be forward, so unless people are interested in the semen there will probably be very few buyers present. A great shame because ther used to be a huge number of cattle with severeal more b...

Re: dexter crossing

Why are these cattle called lowline, when they are pedigree aberdeen angus? Surely, this is the size that angus were originaly, before canadian blood was introduced. The herd where I worked fifty years ago was a pedigree herd of this size. The only thing different in those days was that they were re...

Re: Pedigree or Commercial

We worked with a pedigree Angus herd 30 years ago and they were not much bigger than the Dexter in those days. Some breeders are trying to make the Dexter bigger, but it would spoil the breed to do that.
