Re: Short or non-short?

Thanks for your reply - where do you send samples? Is it Uk based? Is there a general rule of thumb visual way to tell? Or ratio of measurements?

Short or non-short?

I'm still quite new to Dexters and this year we had our first calves - but I'm struggling to workout if they are short or non-short. We only have three and they are all from a short bull and non-short mothers - so 50:50 chance - all three look the same but I look at photographs on the internet and o...

Re: How much milk does an orphan calf need?

Thanks for the replies. I haven't been using milk replacer I'd perhaps mistakenly assumed full fat bottled milk would be better. But yes I get the advantage of being able to increase the concentration of the milk if mixing powder. The calf isn't in his own pen. He's in a one acre paddock with the 20...

How much milk does an orphan calf need?

I can find loads of information on the internet about how much milk a normal size calf needs but nothing for Dexters. I have an orphan calf - lost mum when about 14 days old so plenty of colostrum and was feeding well - he's now 50 days old and having 8pints a day of full fat milk split over 4 feeds...

Re: Daftest question.

He is about 20 months and only has 8 cows to serve. I'm quite happy not to have too tight a calving window as it will be our first time too! Having been to a few sales now I would say only one of the eight is a particularly tall long legged dexter - so from the replies and advice here it sounds like...

Re: Daftest question.

Thanks very much! That's set my mind at rest - he's still a bit young really but despite being keen we hadn't seen any activity that looked likely to have been successful. I guess as he gets a bit older and more experienced that should improve? Thanks again!

Daftest question.

This may well be the daftest question many of you will have heard for a while.... but can a short legged bull usually cover non-short cows? Grateful for any answers!

Re: Halter Training

Thanks - good to know it's not impossible at their age! At the moment I'm just getting them used to being handled and touched!

Re: Hello

Hi Rob

Yes they were! I'll get some pictures up - but I don't suppose they're particularly special examples. A good start for us though.

Re: Hello

Hello Stephanie

Literally only began as a Dexter keeper two or three weeks ago - so only have two at the moment, both Dun heifers. The plan is to try and build up to about 10 over the next two summers.

Hello

Just recently started keeping Dexters - looking forward to 'virtually' meeting you all and picking your brains for clues to the best ways forward with the new cows.

Re: Halter Training

Is it possible to begin halter training for the first time with a fairly 'lively' 2.5 year old? Or has the window of opportunity been missed by this age?
