Re: Very slow

I know I've just been busy, busy and the weathers getting hot and it's paralysis tick season... fattening two animals (steer and a year old bull) to send to the freezer and because it's our first time, just working out all the bits has been a job and a half. Not doubt next time it will be easier. We...

Re: Duffryn Diary

Hi Stephanie,

They look lovely, and happy. :)

What a good lot of hay off an acre, our place (in Aus) is lucky to get a feed for one cow off an acre... but it will one day.

Re: De-horn at birth or wait ?

We had one three weeks old but the vet said she needed to wait until he could do it properly and she was very small. So she was done at 6 weeks.

He's done ours between 1-8 weeks.

Re: First return of Dexters to Ireland

Hi Clive,
...it is virtually impossible to fit chondro and non-chondro (of the same breeding and nutrition) within the same standard with any reasonable degree of certainty.
I've wondered this for a long time, and didn't know why there weren't two standards?

Re: First return of Dexters to Ireland

Hi Clive, I've found this a very interesting part of the thread: There is a detailed discussion on the American board on this subject where they discussed having two standards, one for chondro, and one for non-chondro. Also, they have discussed and provided evidence for the very significant differen...

Re: Premature Dexter

Hi Stephanie, Margaret and Denise, Thank you, I know some people like to know how these hand reared animals turn out, so next installment will be with calf. Stephanie she may just do that, recently she and Fairy Floss born the day before her, escaped their paddock and came straight down to th...

Re: smallest calf

Hi Dom,

She is soooo cute in her little hat. :)

Just because she's small doesn't mean she won't catch up that's for sure, my little premmie Fatima is the biggest now! And the most spoilt.

Good luck with her.

Re: Look out for Dingoes

Hi Jane, Yes it's a bit wild and woolly where I am, lots of nature bush (and regrowth) with a creek bounding on much of our 125 acres, so nature is at our front door. We are lucky, so far we've only seen 'pure dingoes' not crossed with dogs. They trot along minding their own business along the creek...

Re: Lost my best cow

Hi djaneyb, Probably not a neighbour but someone just passing, but none the less a terrible thing to happen when you are upset already. I'm really sorry that you lost the cow. I know with my premmie calf, big fat girl now, I take her out to the herd of a morning and she sticks with them all day and ...

Hi Clive,

I'm really sorry, and to go the way she did was awful for you as well as her. I'm pleased you have a heifer from her though.
