Hi Larry, we imported a bull from the mainland 18 mths ago and had nothing but trouble from our department. The blue tongue jags had to be given in England and then there was a time limit to get him over. We also had a B.V.D. done before he came plus current Tb neg.. When he did come he had to be i...

Hi,
The animals come over here on the hook. I believe that there is a slaughter-house in Carlisle that is used.

Hi Anna, I remain convinced that the Dexter is in some way related to the Spanish fighting bull. I do not think that it is a coincidence that this miniture cow was found in Co Kerry years after the Spanish Armada. It is fact that some ships of the Armada went aground of the west coast of Ireland. W...

My wife has kept the grades for 140+ cattle that the group have sent for beef. The bulk of these were O+3, O3, O4L. Only 2 were R Grade and 1 of them was suspect ie, fed straits. R Grade are few and far between. It is worth bearing in mind that most of the native breeds do not grade well. The short...

Congratulations to one of our members, Billy Summerville who this week exported five 13 month old heifers to Italy. They were non-short for beef production. It appears that the taste and quality of Dexter beef clinched the deal. I think that they intend to use A.I. on these animals. At the present ...

Hi Steph. Not only the blisters, you would have probably have involved the vet who would have seen the blisters and before you know it you would have been closed. There would have been a cordon around you and on the news it would have said "suspected case of foot and mouth". It happened b...

Hi Louisa, having read your topic on Irish blacks and reds I went onto Google to find out some facts about this new breed. Going by the shape and weight of the adults I would suggest that there is a lot of Aberdeen Angus (Traditional) in the breed. There is certainly no traditional Irish breed call...

In the past we exported Alpaca into the U.K. and we have had to test for Bovine T.B. before they are exported. This is a requirement. Even a inconclusive would rule export out. No retest would be done. We are not required to test as a rule. I think that this is due to the compensation that would ha...

Hi Louisa, one of our bulls was terrified when thunder was about. We new an hour before it reached us and at one stage he ended up stuck in a covered feeder trying to escape. Being on peat we will be screaming for rain in the next couple of weeks. The tractor did'nt leave a mark in the fields which is most unusu...
