Re: Scottish Dexters, Lanark Mart, 29th August

I have been to that sale for the previous 9 years and never seen cattle sell Duncan. i would cut your losses and not get involved with it. The main stay of the sale is buyers looking for cheap stock for killing or their flocks. Many of the farmers that go there have cottoned on to the fact that many...

Re: Twins

When we were raising dairy veal calves i had several heifers sold to me by the dairy farmers as they were free martins. me being me, i love dairy cows so used to keep them on to see what they did. i had 2 that held the bull and were sold back to the dairy farmers in calf, they loved that!! i had som...

Re: Back on the high horse

I have been finishing dangus stirks straight off the cows for the last year. so they are 8-9months and weighing in around 150kg dead. they have been beautiful for the restaurants. i charge my customer £500 for the calf and £400 for killing butchering, packaging and delivery. And thats primals no sli...

Re: Back on the high horse

No matter how good the product is there is a limit to what people will pay. the wagyu thing is a trend its sold to up market restaurants and delis. try that with dexter and we will alienate most of our customers straight away. it has to be a similsr price to other top quality beef plus 10-15% you mi...

Re: Back on the high horse

Do anyone have any thoughts upon how far out, from what they should be, the current average prices are for the site? I think i would be happy with the eifer prices if thats what they are getting 4-500 seems sensible cows in calf , 6-800 would be fine. bulls who cares i dont steers depending on age ...

Re: Back on the high horse

Rob i am sure you are the exception being retailer and all things in between. but its well documented on how much each suckler looses each year and i dont doubt it. Its sfp keeping most suckler herds afloat. i would think any farmer dealing in belgian blues would be loosing more than most. as for my...

Re: Back on the high horse

I dont think you are right Rob about all native breeds. my angus cattle are keenly sought when i take them to market. I doubt i make a profit selling them but isnt that par for the course. That is also one of the problems, no one makes money in cattle or beef, so why should a Dexter breeder. there a...

Re: Back on the high horse

Robin your at it again! lol I read what you have to say and have spoken to you about it. but i have to say i think you have all missed the point. The reason why dexter cattle are sold at low prices is because they are not commercial cattle. It does not matter what anyone says about making a living f...

Re: cooking

I have to disagree a litle with my esteemed colleagues! aging is everything and will turn your 2 years work into the perfect end product. my examples: veal loins aged for 10 days. upset a chef or 2 when i first started. aged them for another 10 day and they were totally diferent never a complaint si...

Re: Dexters on TV BBC2 Friday 1st Nov 2013

Thanks guys it was better than i could have hoped. the cows were a real mixture. some where pure, others were cross. i think my golloway cross got in on the action. all the calves with no horns were angus cross. that was filmed nearly 2 months ago, and it was amazing to see how much they have grown!...

Snowflake could be milked by hand or machine, and i dont know if they are continuing or not. they had 8 kids to feed so i think the milk was needed!

Re: New to Dexters, looking for a housecow

I sold a lone cow and calf to a family in cumbria to use as a house cow. the cow gets lots of attention and seems fine on her own. she of course has a new calf this year and the old calf still runs with her so they have a nice wee family unit.

Re: York Rare Breeds Show & Sale - 4/5th October 2013

Makes tough reading!

it must be hard selling at those prices, when youve done all the work.i would have beefed them all for that sort of money. if only i could be bothered to drive around these sales i could make a few quid.
but its sad that some people are losing so much on them.
