Boring--- but all my heifer calves are called Della, so we are now on Baranduin Della 11th. The original cow was Beeches Della 11th, so I carried on the tradition of naming them the same way. The latest one is a red bull born two weeks ago. I will try for some pics soon but it is very muddy.

Hello all My red cow calved last week. She was 6 months later than usual due to unforeseen circumstances. Her previous calf is still here and suckled her up to about July. The day she calved and prior to calving I spotted her 18 month old daughter sucking her. I separated them. Do you think I ought...

Hi all Went out this morning having been away for the weekend and found that the yearling heifer has ripped the tag out. There is a long split in the ear now and it is healing so no question of stitching it I think. WHAT A NUISANCE! it will be an even bigger job than usual trying to find a place fo...

If you are doing just the odd one like me then it all goes on the kitchen table and people come and get what they want. The various cuts come from the abattoire in marked boxes such as best braising steak or brisket. Thecustomers take it away in boxes or carrier bags I have a price list and individ...

What an excellent bit of film. The DCS should definitely archive it. It is so interesting to look at all the little cows from the 1940's then use that other brilliant resource on the DCS site to trace back your cow's pedigree. Mine goes back on the dam line to 1942. I have called all my females Del...

Hi
How many acres have you got?
Thistles are a nuisance. I am comparing spraying one lot with SBK and cutting the others several times with the ride on lawn mower.
Harrowing and rolling will be fine but next winter you need to confine the cattle otherwise the land will deteriorate.

I agree with Cyndy, just get the halter rope on the neck like a lassoo and tie them up. Put the halter on when tied up. They cannot do as much when they are choking. I use a neck strap on mine it is easy to clip a lead rope on and tie it. I have useda pony headcollar in the field also. My friend tr...

You must tie the cow up and as it is winter just keep her tied up in the old fashioned way. Keep her calf and the other one in a calf box near by and let them both out together to feed a few times a day. I am not sure how often. Make sure there is enough room on both sides. Give her a nice bucket o...

Some of my sheep have this type of thing---snow blindness we call it. Nothing to do with silage here as they were on hay. Hard to catch the semiblind sheep as they will not follow the others. I put the ointment in and there has been improvement but not clearance.

Hi all
I too got rid of barbed wire because of the horses but the cows do abuse the plain wire. They lean over the pig net and under the plain wire and push it down. Then the staples come out. I think I would definitely use barbed wire if I just had the cows.

On the other side of the coin I rely on the goodwill of the folks who let me use their bull. So thanks to Graham Hunt, Louisa Gidney, David Harle and the late Dave Dawson i have managed a calf every year for 20 years. I have taken my cow out and had bulls in. The main worry is the fencing for the b...
