Re: Dosing calves
As others have said dosing for fluke and worms is not as simple as might be thought, every farm has slightly different circumstances, and the different drugs used have different effects on different ages of parasite, especially the fluke treatments. It is important to consult your vet in relation to...

Re: DCS AGM postponed
Well I got my papers, or such papers as are available, for the AGM yesterday lunch time. Post mark 22nd, 2nd class - so it was not posted until the day it should have arrived. Perhaps Di could offer some explanation on the timing and on the lack of financial report, since she seems to have time on h...

Re: DCS AGM postponed
I have still not received any papers. Normally there is no delay in post between here and Stoneleigh or between Stoneleigh and here. Di's post I find very very disturbing, as it contains a great deal of inaccuracy and is clearly an attempt to undermine Council and its chairman. As usual the lack of ...

Re: DCS AGM postponed
There is little sign of the Council wishing to be any more open and communciative with the membership. Communication now is easier than it has ever been, so many ways to get news to people, and so little coming from DCS to the membership or the public. I am trying to coordinate a visit by 15 or more...

Re: Has anyone else started feeding hay?
I usually start feeding my main herd about March.
They stay outside on large area of hill/permanent grass/scrub and get some feeding in spring.

Re: Hello
Hello Ben, what part of the country are you in? It is always good to have new members and new herds starting, have you got any cattle yet, how do you plan on sourcing stock? There will be a number of auctions in different parts of the country at this time of year.
Best wishes

Burnside Orraman, one of the bulls running with our cows and heifers this year, someone hiding behind him just spoils the outline. Good to be able to post pictures here again, thanks to Mark and Chris

Re: Pat Short, Elmwood Dexters.
There was an email with two pics, which is how I heard the sad news. Pat will be missed not least for her incredible photgraphic displays, and enthusiastic dancing at the AGMs. Mrs Pat Short Mrs Pat Short of the well-known Elmwood Pedigree Dexter Herd and current President of the Dexter Cattle Socie...

Re: Linear Assessment - Height
I can't beleive that is actually how it is applied Tim, though I can see where you found it. Any animal over or under height is, as far as I know, rejected altogether and not assessed.

Re: Cambridge Herd -Research
Does this help:- Crossbreeding experiments with Dexter cattle were done at Cambridge University in 1953 by Sir John Hammond to determine the maternal effect on calf size and development of the offspring. The largest of the British breeds, South Devon, was bred by artificial insemination to Dexter fe...

Re: No Dexters have 100% Complete Pedigrees back to Dublin
I suspect that we are doing Kirk a disservice if we assume he does not understand the difference between polled and dehorned. In his assertion that those who dehorn are not following the 1900 breed standard however he is looking at the physical similarity - neither polled nor dehorned cattle have ho...

Re: UK Registry requirements
PHA is a genetic problem, and the methods of dealing with such things are by necessity different from infectious diseases, but Tim is right we need to be aware of infectious diseases and biosecurity. I hate the word biosecurity but it is in widespread use. During my last spell on DCS council the gen...

Re: UK Registry requirements
Glad to see a few more posts here, the issue of PHA has never had much of a public hearing in the UK Dexter circles although it is a major issue in other countries. Even when I was part of a committee looking at such things it was never properly discussed. My reason for responding to Kirk's post her...

Re: UK Registry requirements
I have to say I am very sad that in a whole week no one else has seen fit to contribute to this thread. Is no one interested, or are you all to scared to put your head above the parapet?
Come on, lets have some thoughts.
