Re: Bull registration costs

The increased cost of registrations presumably began long before any form of parent verification was available. The effect would be to reduce the chance of errors because the longer it was from birth the more likely it was that mistakes had crept in. Now we have DNA verification, very reliable, no d...

Re: Interesting stats.

Here is the discussion paper from the latest Bulletin. All DCS members should be reading this and trying to make some sense of it - we should be discussing the suggestions, offering alternatives, trying to understand what would be best for DCS. I really do applaud the publication of it in the Bullet...

Re: Outwintering? In for the winter?

I operate a rather upside down system mainly to avoid contact with neighbouring cattle because I am Hi Health accredited for BVD IBR Lepto and Johnes Level 1. Neighbours on two sides are not, and even if they were single fence of dry stone walls are just inviting mixing of cattle. So mine stay in fi...

Re: Some early Dexters

Yes it appears to be, but I have always assumed that "the organs of generation" would include the sheath which of course takes us in bulls virtually to the navel which is the allowed limit in females.

Some early Dexters

thumbnail (4).jpg This cow appears in a number of illustrations, I think born in early 1890's. The bull Paradox was born in 1884 and purchased by Martin J Sutton from J Robertson, Malahide. Mr Robertson was responsible for exporting a significant number of those sent from Ireland to England. Duncan

Re: Photographs of your Dexters ....

thumbnail (2).jpg thumbnail (1).jpg thumbnail (1).jpg thumbnail.jpg It seems to get wetter and wetter here. The Burnside herd usually stay up here from October till end of January without any extra feeding. The ground has a dry stane dyke boundary which usually has limousin and holstein heifers on ...

Re: Yew

Yew is one of the most deadly poisonous plants we have. Even sawdust from yew wood is said to be poisonous. I was reading your post again Monica, notice you say that the poor people did not know they had yew - could it be one of those tragic cases where someone dumps hedge trimmings in a field? Or d...

Re: Photographs of your Dexters ....

Thought I would be safe enough here Rob, then someone pointed out that by broomstick Bute is not so far away from Yorkshire as I thought.

Re: Yew

I lost one heifer a month off first calving from yew. More or less all the herd were grazing a field in front of a large country house with ornamental trees round the edge of the field but outside an iron railing. There was a yew tree with ivy growing up it, not very usual I don't think. The weight ...

Re: Interesting stats.

Whilst that may well be interesting, the DCS has never had a geographically base for representation. It may well be that these figures look interesting this year, but how many years would the balance be the opposite, and is this really relevant? What is important is that Council members are running ...

Re: Hello from France

The Dexter network is a wondrous thing! I heard from Kate Pude about a new vet coming to an island near the island I practice on a few years ago before any local info was available! Best wishes for your new venture, I do not think you will regret it. Two heifers will most likely not be enough!

DCS AGM Oct 14th 2017

Hello All, as everyone heads to the AGM, can I ask everyone to take a very calm and careful look at all the issues that may be raised tomorrow. In particular there being no financial report for us to view, I think that a few more details regarding this are bound to be discussed. It is my understandi...
