Re: Expectant mother and inexperienced keeper

Calves have been weaned off cows and they are due to calve end of march. What should i be doing now. What feed and licks and should i dose with anything. We keep it fairly simple, and all we've ever done is give them good quality hay, silage/haylage (ad-lib). And we also give them special pre-calve...

Re: Bull For Sale

We are in Barnsley S Yorkshire (TB 4years). He is de-horned but not polled, I have certificates for his pedigree, we wll be sad to see him go really but we are having a change round in system. Hi Tom, I have a friend who's looking round for a Dexter Bull but it's probably too far for him to go unle...

Re: Bull For Sale

Hi We have decided to sell our pedigree Black Dexter Bull he will be 7 years old now I think, he is in good fettle and keen to work. He is quiet, can be a little head strong when he has no ladies to serve but otherwise fine, and has produced piles of good calves that can be seen. Please get in touc...

Re: Straw vs Hay

Hi Sue I've not got any actual bad experiences with using feed blocks or any feed during pregnancy because we've never done it. I suppose I'd be more concerned about keeping the cow is moderate condition, not getting fat, than the size of the calf. We cross to a larger bull breed so I am extremely c...

Re: Straw vs Hay

We use straw sometimes if we have to (much prefer hay and so do the cattle) but we always pour cattle molasses over the straw, they eat more and get a good dose on minerals and energy in a controlled manner. We use Rumevite blocks as well, but not for cows in calf because of worry that some might go...

Re: The most horrific horn injury

No horns here. Only ever had one, and never, ever again. Mate up the road has Highlands. They are calm and easy to handle but I will not go anywhere near the b*&^^*&^dy things. One twitch of the head and you're in trouble.

Both in the freezer after drugs have passed their date if I were you.

Re: calving

PS. Two particular things to watch out for... Calf is born with the bag over the head and suffocates. When cow has calved, or the calf is not quite completely out, get your fingers and break/pull the bag from around it's nose and mouth so it can breathe. Unless it is obviously breathing, when it's f...

Re: calving

If new, first of all try and have someone to hand who knows what to do at quick notice. Normally this might be a vet, or a local farmers or breeder. Is it heifers or cows? Heifers can take a long time calving and faffing about, but if a cow, if she doesn't calve within a 2 of hours of starting to sh...

Re: Herd Management and winter feeding

Hello Ours stay out depending on the weather, if constant rain they come in. Had rain scald one year and don't want it again apart from the mud! But OK this year as it's fairly dry'ish. Ours all have calves at foot, spring born which will be weaned about Christmas time when they will probably all co...

Re: Woodmagic

It's a lot to do with the weather as well IMO. Last year we had to trim a lot of ewe's feet and virtually all cattle, but usually we trim say about ⅓-½ the cattle and maybe 5% of the sheep. The tups got into a terrible state, had to bring them in.

Re: Dexters on countryfile

I was doubtful about that as well Rob. Looked into it a few years back and they skipped over all the difficulties and made it sound easy. First you need treated grain, the equipment and storage was expensive. The output you require would be huge. Even for 50 Dexters like he has, you would need the e...

Re: New to Dexters, looking for a housecow

Now of course comes the company question! Is one too small a number? That's the question I've always wanted to ask. How do they get on alone? Our previous assurance scheme banned keeping any animal of any species on it's own. By the way, we've bred 100% for beef, and of all the cows we've ever had,...

Re: dexters on TV again (northern Ireland)

Clive's right re: criticism. I slaughtered a tup lamb last year and a customer returned the meat on the basis that it tasted bad (they'd eaten a half shoulder joint). I contacted other customers and they'd had no issues with the other side, and then the leg went on to win a taste award. Maybe it wa...
