Re: Moreton In Marsh Show
I had planned to show at Moreton this year, but withdrew because the bull I planned to show was sold at the end of August. I heard from the show organisers that at the entry closing date, he was the only Dexter entered.

Re: Another Nail in the Coffin
I'm convinced that its not Europe that is driving these petty enforcements but our own police and bureaucrats. I have even heard senior politicians complaining that our own people gold-plate the rules to make themselves look good. But quite often they get it wrong. A couple of years ago VOSA and the...

Re: Hello, and start up question.
I wouldn't rely on cattle being halter trained for them to be calm at TB testing time. I have two young bulls, both halter trained and generally quiet. One is very laid back and doesn't flinch when he gets a TB test jab, or when the vet takes a blood sample or even when he was ringed. The other is a...

Can't agree with you more Duncan. I've been dealing with a Holstein herd over the past year or so. When I first encountered them, they were nervous, agitated and difficult to handle bordering on dangerous. We made a minor modification to the milking parlour and everything has changed. The same cattl...

Re: Cattle Sign
I had some signs made up - They say Cows in Field - No Dogs. There were no footpaths across our fields but that didn't seem to bother walkers. There is an ancient cross in a nearby piece of woodland and many people seem to think they can take any route they choose to reach it.

Re: Carcass Price ?
Our latest killed out at 189 kg (medium heifer) and 228 kg & 238 kg (non-short steers) sold to a butcher by Mike Bancroft for £4.20/kg dw. Steers made a few pence under £1000 apiece.
We have interest for more, but sourcing enough stock to meet demand is tough.

Re: cooking
Thankyou Jac, yes the catering butcher has close control of what they are doing and there is no comparison with "just hanging it in a barn". But, some years ago I ate some beef in a restaurant in Kosovo. I commented on its taste and texture to a colleague who was an experienced butcher. He...

Re: cooking
Earlier this year, I visited a catering butcher that specialises in supplying high end restaurants. They have invested heavily in cold-rooms for dry aging their beef, and the stock they hold in the cold-rooms is itself worth a significant amount. They wouldn't go to that amount of trouble and expens...

Re: Wanted
As far as I know, they were always designed to work with chilled water. In the 1950's, my dad used a surface cooler which dribbled milk down the faces of two corrugated stainless steel plates but even that used chilled water from a refrigeration unit. The base tank of our in-churn cooler used to bui...

Re: Wanted
Do you have the other parts of the cooler? The piece shown in the auction catalogue is only one part of it. It really needs a refrigeration unit, a base tank and a chilled water circulation pump. We used them with 10 gallon churns in the early 1960's. The churns stand on slats over the water tank, c...

We are getting just over £4 a kilo ungraded [but paying slaughter fees]. Farmers Guardian reported last week that native breeds - Hereford cross - are fetching £4.55 a kilo.

Re: Council Resignation
I question that the issue of minutes of council minutes being held confidential was voted for and approved at the last AGM. I attended the AGM and knew nothing of this, and it does not appear in the minutes. I also think that its completely ridiculous that some council members have apparently refuse...

Re: What pour on wormer???
This is slightly off topic but I've been using Spot-on to reduce mites when the cattle are inside for the winter. Its been effective for a short period. This year I've used Closamectin as I had one [bought in] steer with liver fluke. Even though the animals have been inside for a full two months lon...
