Re: How much milk does an orphan calf need?
I would not mess with the concentration of made up milk, with hindsight it might have been an idea to let the calf run with the other cows and calves, and if he had been suckling his dam for a couple of weeks he might have been able to find another cow happy to let him get milk when her own calf was...

Re: How much milk does an orphan calf need?
I have bucket fed Dexter calves in the past, but always inside and provided plenty hay/straw and ad lib cake, treated them like commercial dairy calves. Much more difficult to get the extra feed in which happens as they increase concentrate/cake intake, I suspect that you have to increase the milk i...

Re: Johne's Vaccine
It may be hard to do any sums to show the benefit, but the benefit is not all going to show as higher prices at sales etc. There is a lot of peace of mind in knowing that you are keeping a lot of infectious problems out, and being able to show that to others.I have subscribed to the Hi Health scheme...

Re: Johne's Vaccine
Johnes vaccine is not used normally unless there is a real problem. There is quite a drive on to make sure more dairy herds are addressing any Johnes problems at the moment, so we may hear of more herds having some sort of recognised Johnes disease status. This is usually listed as "risk level&...

Re: DCS AGM Oct 14th 2017
I am quite hopeful that after the current crisis is over there will be a lot of change with regard to communication within DCS and that a discussion board within the DCS website is likely to be on of the improvements. In the meantime the new The Dexter Cattle Society facebook page gives us a place t...

Re: DCS AGM Oct 14th 2017
There is a new closed group page on facebook, The Dexter Cattle Society which will allow DCS members to have discussions in a civil and non abusive manner without being open to the world. It is not intended to replace Mark' discussion board. It has only been there about 3 days and we have 60 members...

Re: Post Movement Testing
Jac I certainly don't want to put anyone off, but to encourage them. The biosecurity aspects of it are something that I suspect a lot of folk could do with help with, a lot of it may look difficult but when you have worked out what you have to do for your farm it becomes easier. Memebership of the s...

Re: Post Movement Testing
I think the advantages of joining the scheme will be mainly focusing efforts on how to best keepTB free, there are fairly strict biosecurity regulations, and you and your vet have to draw up a plan for your herd. Have a look at http://www.checs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/CHeCS-bTB-Herd-Accredi...

Re: Two German Shepherd attack Dexters
Horrible business to have to face Rob. There are so many different reasons why these incidents happen, sometimes the owner just does not give a stuff, sometimes the owner is incredibly responsible and an escape just happens, but every dog owner should know that their dog, regardless of size or breed...
