A cousin used to export sheep to France in years gone by. They had to be inspected twice during a 28 day quarantine period before travelling. Someone needs to ask why this isn't being done. EU free trade regulations are fine when dealing with video's and cheap booze, but hopeless when dealing with ...

I just found this on the web - Section 59 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981 bans bulls of recognised dairy breeds (Ayrshire, British Friesian, British Holstein, Dairy Shorthorn, Guernsey, Jersey and Kerry) in all circumstances from being at large in fields crossed by public rights of way. B...

You are right, the farmer is in a very difficult situation. I have been considering getting a "No Dogs" sign made up because in my view, cows with calves at foot are far more likely to be aggressive towards a dog than the average bull would be to a person. In a recent legal case - involvi...

My local DEFRA livestock officer helped me find a cheap crush. One of his friends/neighbours had one lying in a hedge. OK it needed a new floor - I used garden decking - and some general cleaning up and repainting, but it all works including the weighing system. I paid £50 for the crush and it cost...

Sorry that this is not positive info, but my brother - who is a vet - informed me when he injected our Dexters that his practice has had two Alpaca's die after administering the blue tongue vaccine. Their temperature's rose dramatically after the vaccination and they died the next day. A friend had...

Some of the horse people are using chopped rape straw. If you have a few cattle and are using it for bedding only, it may be an option. I believe that its being sold under the tradename of NEDZBED for about £6 a bale.

I'm a bit of a hybrid. A Dexter owner, a farm machinery engineer who used to design balers and my family had a hay and straw business. Round straw bales usually weigh about 150 - 200 kg. Actual weight depends on how tight the operator makes the bale. There are less and less farmers who are prepared...

Unfortunately, I think you are right. Lots of straw is being chopped and those wheat farmers who might have saved it will be under the gun to reseed as soon as they manage to get the harvest in so they will chop it to save time.

My family has been involved in livestock exports and I was under the impression that stock had to be quarantined for 28 days and checked by a vet at least twice in that period before export. So why is that not being done? Free trade of inert goods is one thing but livestock is totally different. To...
