Re: York Rare Breeds Show & Sale - 4/5th October 2013
I've got the 8 hour one but there is a limit to how much rattling and rolling I can stand in a historic landrover. That's the one I've got, maybe it doesn't have a mileage limit? I think you're right. But I think I've remembered what going on in my head, and it's Tachos. From my awful memory, you c...

Re: York Rare Breeds Show & Sale - 4/5th October 2013
A national sales make more sense to to the small market for Dexters, but how can you go to anything other than regional sales. My transport license only covers me for 100km radius as the crow flies?
Even most of the regional ones are out of my range?
Or have I got something wrong?

Re: Old beef?
Slightly off topic, but does anyone have any comments on the merits or otherwise of mature entire bull beef? I have a 3 year old bull that needs to be culled due to his antics towards me! Is it worth considering him for home consumption or is he well past it!!?? Thanks Only done one at 27 months ol...

and i dont have to work for some idiot. I do  At least with a job the idiot goes home at the end of the day. I have to work for an idiot as well, me, trouble is I'm with me 24/7 !!! Dom is right. I reckon keeping cattle can bring a benefit if it's an add-on to something else. We've got just a...

Re: Disappointing
Many thanks for the offer of regs Jac, but life is too short :). I shouldn't have asked! And these regs are developed by people who can't tell a horse from a cow :). My point about pedigree/birth notification was that even though the parents may be controlled by PV (not applicable to all or even mos...

Re: Disappointing
That's the EU beef labelling regs for you - you can call it "beef", but anything else has to be approved & verified. I can understand that, but it means that no beef can be called by it's breed name without PV'ing the offspring, including pedigree!!! Would doubt that's how it works, a...

Re: Disappointing
So, as an example, if you have a herd of pedigree Dexters cows/bull, but do not register/birth notify the offspring, then you cannot call them Dexter? I don't believe it. Do you know of some DEFRA/RPA literature that explains it that we could read? And, off the point really in a way, but how does be...

Re: Disappointing
As for he beef stickers, i bought some because my restaurant friend wants dexter beef. but i have no reg or birth notified beasts to sell after this year, so i have the joke of a situation where i am selling beef that is dexter but i cant call it dexter beef. its a joke! Dom, If your beef is Dexter...

Re: Disappointing
get a supermarket involved! booths, morrisons, aldi. just look at the angus and shothorn societies. tesco looking to source 2500 head of angus every week! At 2500 a week, for one supermaket, the national herd of AA's would disappear in 2-3 years I just calculated. So presumably, that's why they hav...

Re: Disappointing
Going back to the original post, i.e. prices are too low. But are they? As I said before, I have never sold a beast at less than beef value (plus a bit for hassle), but have only once taken stock to market. I don't go to market because you don't get value there, unless you're the buyer :). So to re-...

Re: Disappointing
The buyer won't have known what the dam breed was Robin, only the sire is on the passport. So the steer that I saw sold, which was my breeding, was simply sold as a DexterX because the owner (completely new to cattle) had registered it incorrectly. Had the passport been done to the norm, it should h...

Re: Carlisle Sale
I got £850 culling a small non-short bull last year. And prices are better now! Surely the lowest price for any half-decent bull should be over £1000?

Re: Disappointing
Spot on Jac and said much better than I ever could. Would just add that with AI'ing, you can buy sexed semen if you want all male or all female progeny (not 100% guaranteed though, but still high certainty). But it is quite expensive, say £35 a straw instead of £12. I'm thinking about using it but n...

Re: Disappointing
If you're disappointed money-wise, try crossing with a larger breed bull, something that is mainstream, Angus/Hereford/whatever is best in your area. But I wouldn't do it on heifers or anything too small. Then make sure the progeny are shown as Angus X (or whatever breed you chose) on their passport...
