The champion bull of the Sussex Society is owned by a woman who shows her bulls all over the south east and at last years Royal. She always goes into the ring on her own. Another large herd has a female manager and she also shows at least two bulls one for her and one for the herdsman. I don't see ...

That will bugger me then, Sussex cows are around 600kg + and I normally transport 4 at a time or 3 cows plus calves.

Going to shows is your hobby isn't it? I think you would be exempt from the rules in that case. Though don't take my word on it :;): I think if you check up it has to be an economic purpose like going to market or the butcher. I doubt very much if anyone other than Ministry of Transport people know...

One of my fields that I use mainly for Hay/silage has too much clover and it tends to choke the grass. Although I want the clover I also need some grass in the mix so every spring I put nitrogen on to check the clover and encourage the grass. This works very well in my situation and the regrowth co...

I live about a mile from my farm and work full time, so anything that maybe a problem now or in the future has to go! I let my head rule my heart now and am very strict on what stays and what goes, with the limited number of animals I am able to keep it just makes sense in my situation. I have two ...

I can understand how our friends from over the pond have a little chuckle about us trying to cope with conditions that to them are balmy. The problem we have in the UK is that freezing conditions do not last very long and we have very few times when we are really put out so we do not invest in the ...

I am using Barley straw for bedding and use one large round bale a week. The day I put the bale in I do not feed any hay as the cows do tuck into the straw. I have 3 three year olds and 6 two year old Sussex in the same yard, I always like the bedding to be a bit dirty before I add more as too much...

Bring her in and let her settle. I have two calving in January and they have been in a couple of weeks now. Calving at this time of year I would not contemplate doing it outside, better for cow, calf and owner to be under cover.

About six inches of snow last night and more forcast for later today. Cattle are all inside and are nice and snug. Water still ok this morning as the temperature has risen from the last two frosty days. Forcast for the weekend is for -6 or below so I expect a few difficulties then.

I have finished dexters both steers and heifers with beef nuts. I had no problem with the steers but heifers tended to lay on a lot of fat. You should keep an eye on them to ensure they do not put too much fat on (muscle is hard to the touch fat is soft). I would start with one kilo night and morni...
