Re: Dexter ears...

Yes! I noticed the "wings" on the photo of your dun bull when he was a calf.

I breed the dwarfs and more often than not they are born with legs that appear long, and then it is amazing to watch them do what I call growing "down". The legs growshorter. :)

Re: Begging a favor

Mrs. Smith I need the birth record page in 1943 for Mr. Clive's Limbury herd. I think this was the year of dispersal of the herd.

Thanks ever so much for your response.

Begging a favor

Does anyone on here have a set of herd books that includes the 40's that would be willing to copy one page for me from one book. It is as simple as this . . . . . open the book, find the page, take the cell phone and photograph the page I need and then email it via the phone. I will do an extended p...

Re: UK Registry requirements

Midge is not an insect name you hear in the US. I have seen you all discussing the problems with midges and badgers for years. .. but we don't have a badger issue here either. I had to google midge to see if they have them in the US, and there wasn't a lot of immediate info. non-biting midges are ca...

Re: UK Registry requirements

In the US there are only 4 aborted calves of which *i* am personally aware. . . . . however. . .. . . there were hundreds of carrier animals identified descending from one cow. I inquired . . . . because PHA should be far more of a concern than the dwarf genetics, ( which were the foundation of the ...

UK Registry requirements

I note that in 2017 there is a requirement for chondrodysplasia testing on bulls being registered. Why is there no similar requirement for PHA? One cow, imported from the UK herd to Canada was the source of PHA in the Canadian, American, and Australian herds. PHA moved silently through the US for mo...

Pedigrees and Photos

DCS Herd book volumes 1-9 are now entered complete on Legacy. All but five of the first 24 volumes are entered, and three of those are in progress. All of the 1930's except two are also entered complete. There are many, many, historical photos that can be seen with individual listings, or . .. . eve...

Re: Di Smith Linear

Thanks much Jac. I saw that and thought the bull photos were missing. Drat. I think new breeders have more confusiin and angst as to a decision on a bull prospect than a cow. i still do.

Re: Di Smith Linear

On the DCS website there is a link for the Linear classificatiion outlines. When you flip through the pages only illustrations for cows are there. Could someone give me the link for bulls?

Thanks

Your best guess on historical bull

In the historical Grinstead videos from British Pathe, you will see a bull being led by his nose. WHO is he? Is he SPARR NERO 1428, or OXLEY TIM 1447? There is an outside chance he could be Castle Morton Fann 1456 but it is so doubtful to not be considered because of the size of the horns. This is a...

Re: New calf

Mildown, Your calf is a dun calf. Both parents have to be carrying the dun color for it to be expressed in the calf. I have been researching and tracing dun for years, and I believe it was present in foundation cattle, some being registered as reds, and I think I have traced dun to foundation, yet s...

Dexters with curly hair

On the back cover of P. L. Curran's book, " Kerry and Dexter Cattle and other ancient Irish breeds", there is a photo of a South African bull, who appears to have been carefully groomed for show or photographic event. The hair from just in front of the shoulders is very tightly curled and ...
