We've had 5-6 inches here in Bromsgrove, took me over an hour each way to go to do what is normally a 10 minute journey. With the M5 shut most of the traffic was diverted on to the A38 and then got stuck on the slightest incline. So with two fields 4 miles apart to check/feed it took most of the da...

Clive,

I presume at this price you are not paying for the slaughter?

My normal abattoir was fully booked until after Christmas, so I have been forced to use a different one which although closer is more expensive (£270 instead of £180 for kill, butcher and pack). Having unloaded the animal I was asked whether I wanted to clean my trailer there (£5) instead of having...

Hi Helen,

You may find the abattoir has a food chain decleration you can sign when you get there, but best download a form from Clive's site for this first visit.

When I took my first steer to a local abattoir they were ready with the blue pipe, but when I called him by name and he calmly walked off the trailer, the pipe soon disappeared and they asked me to walk him right through the race. The pipe never appeared again in subsequent visits. Also at my last ...

Thanks Clive, good idea I think I'll try a few cheap personal attack alarms tied to the bales closest to the entrance.

Unfortunately I am too far away to be able to hear anything, but it might make them run off.

Went to one of my fields yesterday and noticed the door the shed was open and some small bales have been taken.

Probably no more than 6 have been taken, but I am guessing they may come back for more, so I will have to check more frequently.

Has anyone else had any hay stolen?

Intrestingly I came across a farm shop website yesterday, where they claim to only sell meat from heiffers through their shop as they claim they provide the best eating quality.

Is there any substance tto such a claim?

I suppose this is only really economical for larger breeders that regularly sell stock and therefore frequently have TB tests done for the animals they are selling and therefore there is no real additional cost. I try to get the return test to coincide with my annual test, but where this is not pos...

This is something I am trying to get to grips with as well. I have just been revising my retail prices and also want to start some commercial sales as well. Previous posts / the DCS beef marketing info have talked about prices per kg, with retail around £10.50/kg and the cost of production to a pac...

Bovine TB is always goign to be an emotive subject. I try to be objective about the subject but so much of the information out there is biased to one camp or the other. Colin I am afraid I find the www.bovinetb.co.uk site about as objective as the Badger Trust one! In my mind what is clear is the p...

Hi Clive,

How did you get on with the beet?
Did you feed whole or shred?
Was it labour intensive?

Just looking at options with the high cost of hay this year.

Went to check the cattle last night and noticed this on the upper lip of one of them.

Image

Could it be an infected whisker or something that has pierced his lip from the inside? It does not seem to be bothering him.

Any thoughts?
