DEFRA should also help us a little here, as most people would be unable to get a holding number for a 'garden' and therefore wouldn't be able to move the cows onto their land. Unfortunately not, when you register for a holding number and herd number they have no interest in the land associated with...

I suppose it could be that she just reacts to bites unlike the others, but they have all had pour on at the same time and she is the only one affected.

She was bulling last week, can that make them more prone to insect bites than normal?

My cow periodically gets dozens of small lumps around her neck. They are only really noticeable close up or when you give her a rub. They do not cause her any irritation and none of the other 5 Desters with her have the same. Up to now I have put this down to her been greedy and especially partial ...

The one thing I underestimated when starting out with Dexters was the logistics nightmare of trying to co-ordinate everything! I have to move off my current field at the end of the month and my cattle are due to go to a nature reserve for 2 months grazing. Once there handling facilities will be mor...

I don't know anything about showing and how the animals are judged, but why not award extra points for none carriers and increase the weighting given to this over a period of time.

That way the problem can be erradicated over time without peanalising people overnight?

I cannot see the point of using Dexters for veal under normal circumstances. I do believe that anyone concerned with animal welfare that consumes dairy products should be encouraged to try rose veal raised to RSPCA standards. I think most people choose not to eat veal on welfare grounds, but by not...

I personally get nothing from the genetics project, however I do appreciate that is of interest and I presume benefit to other members of the society.

We have to accept that within the DCS there is probably a broader base of interest groups than in any other cattle breed society.

I wonder if they will they be serving Dexter beef?

I saw the final and although his recipe had been based on Dexter, his supplier sent the wrong sized cuts so he had to get replacement cuts which were not Dexter

I don't think I have ever paid over £200 for a steer.

The last 3 I bought were:
- £200 18 mths non-short
- £180 12 mths non-short
- £175 9 mths short

All 3 were purchased together and I paid the asking price

Clive, I don't think it is quite that simple. You will need to get a Sole Occupancy Authority (SOA). Contact your Animal District Health Officer and tell them you want to get an SOA for the field. They will then contact your nominated vet and they will come out (at tax payers expense) and inspect t...

I am sure like many others I am now feeling guilty that I did not attend and vote in favour of the changes. It does seem a shame that such a small number of votes can block what on the whole seemed to be common sense modernisation i.e. proxy voting and council meetings by teleconference. I for one ...

A National Show & Sale should only be for the best examples of a breed, surely it is intended to be the showcase of the best a breed has to offer? I have no problem with it being elitist that is what I expect it to be. The only reason I would attend would be to meet other members and to try and...

I was quite surprised that when I asked my vet he was very dismissive and said he did not think it was worth bothering due to the fact it is for only one strain of the virus and the relatively low mortality in cattle.

I don't see how they can wipe out the virus unless it is made compulsory.
