Re: Mini baler and wrapping system

Purchased an old Wolvo mini baler and wrapper earlier in the year and finally got around to using it on a test area over the last 2 days. So far I am very happy with it, my only criticism being the manual is absolutely useless and as a result it has taken me several hours to work out how to get the ...

Re: New rules for TB at shows

The same rule changes are going to affect sole occupancy authorities, which will have a severe impact on me as renting all my ground I rely on them. I will have to check whether the stated change to "no new SOA's" will apply to adding land to an existing SOA or not. Could have a big impact...

How much to offer in rent for a barn/shed?

I have been offered 32 acres of land to rent along with a shed consisting of: - 5 bays 15'x18' - 5 bays 15'x24' - central feed passage - I can rent the whole shed or just one part of it. I know what I want to pay for the land and this is more or less in line with what the potential landlord is looki...

Re: my steer stats

I don't know for sure, but as his mother did not get in calf so he was still suckling occasionally at 24 months and his weight was significantly higher than the other two which were bought in at 12 months of age.

Re: my steer stats

I only have the deadweights when I have sent them to a butcher - 3 non short steers in the last 12 months 197.6kg aged 33.7 months on average.

Two were significantly lower around 184kg and one that had been left to wean naturally 224kg.

Mark, did you find something suitable to treat this? I have a cow that has one, it is not causing any problems at the moment but would like to try something on it.

Re: feeding straw

Gosh, those prices are frightening. The prices here have started to fall, at the most recent fodder sale small bale hay had come down from £3.80 to £3.00 and large bale haylage down to £26 http://www.taylerandfletcher.co.uk/displayfile.asp?id=110064 Would it be worthwhile finding a local haulage com...

Looks very good and a big improvement on the old site.

Could you please add a hyperlink to the Midland Dexter Group website http://www.midlanddextergroup.co.uk/ on the Regional Groups page?

Re: 4x4 insurance, any recomendations

I had a similar problem re: the trailer when trying to shop around for insurance.

The other thing to remember is the breakdown cover that comes with the NFU policy includes recovery of the vehicle and trailer.

Re: Steer prices

The Midland Dexter Group Marketing Scheme referred to in the January 2012 Bulletin has proved very useful for me. It has allowed me to take 2 animals at a time, one for me and one for the scheme, thereby reducing the transport cost per animal and I am sure less stressful for the animals. My private ...

Short Rib / Jacob's Ladder

Searching around the internet yesterday I found a lot of tasty sounding US based recipes for short ribs which I believe we call Jacob's Ladder in the UK (according to the Eblex literature). This will use some of the brisket joints, but I am tempted to try it for something a bit different. Has anyone...

Re: TB TESTS, ARE VETS TAKING THE MICK!

Sounds cheap to me, try getting a plumber out on 2 separate days for half an hour and I bet there are a lot that would charge you more than £130.
