The Midland Dexter Group had a demonstration last summer from Eric Sansome using a turnover crush, photos on the website http://midlanddextergroup.weebly.com/ch ... -2010.html

Faecal Egg Count Service

Can anyone recommend a company to use for faecal egg counts?

I have done a web search and come across Abbey Diagnostics and Westage Labs at £7-8 per sample, but they seem to be equine only. Graig Farm Producers is another, but at £17.99+VAT for one test I would not bother.

I have been asked by a neighbour if I would take one of his Dexters to slaughter when I next take one of mine. If I am reading the rules on multiple-pickups correctly http://www.defra.gov.uk/foodfar....713.pdf then we will need an area of hardstanding (concrete or tarmac) to use the options for &qu...

David - thank you for kind kind the offer. I also share concerns about the Chinese/Indian manufactured kit, but my understanding is the Star baler is assembled in Japan but with most of the parts sourced from China so I'm hoping there will have been some reasonable quality control. The only alterna...

Thanks for the write up Duncan, a few questions:

1) Did you have any training on the baler, or did you just manage with the manual?
2) Do you just manually list the bales onto the wrapper?
3) Roughly how many conventional small bales to the mini-round?

Thanks. Ben

There has been a small drop in prices around here, with the recent warm spell I think people with lots to spare have been wanting to off load it. I've had to buy in some, got 4 large heston bales of haylage at £40 each. Duncan - like Steve I'm interested to hear more about the mini baler. I would l...

Thanks Clive, £20 was what I had in mind. It is taking me up to an hour at the moment, but come May there won't be an feed to sort out, so it will probably be more like half an hour. I thought an less would be asking a bit much of somine to go out and check the stock.

I need to go away on business in May and think I will be expecting too much for friends to cattle sit for a week

What would be a fair price to pay someone to inspect the stock daily? Probably about an hour per day to include fuel (probably 20 miles in total).

Natasha - I had a similar situation up until last year and if all the animals are under one holding number, linked holdings or sole occupancy authority then they should be tested under the tighter of the two regimes. However, no doubt this is subject to individual Animal Health Officer's understand...

Not such a mystery afterall, I forgot my cattle had been in contact with a neighbour's although only for a couple of hours before they realised. Spoke to him yesterday and his have ringworm, just worried about what else they could have caught! Of the top 5 there are only 2 that were not born in the...

Well it seems to be about the right time to return to the annual topic of ringworm. My herd are outdoors all year and I have never had any until now. It started during the cold period over Christmas and at first I was worried one of them had got frostbite! It also appears to follow ranking of the a...

Came across this company (saw one of their bags in a Countrywide Store's yard) http://www.farmxs.info/index.html.

Seems quite reasonable, purchase a bulk bag at £6 each and can deliver for free or pay for collection.

Anyone tried them?

Well I had two of these damn things in the fields this morning, one of them within 50m of my hay (under tarpaulin nut open at the sides).

They were the bamboo type so no wire.

A thaw at last after ten days of sub zero temperatures.

Could not come too soon, it was becoming a real bind and taking me 4 hours a day rather than 45 minutes to sort out the water and feed.
