Re: Old beef?
Hi Nigel, We send our to ABP Shrewsbury (abattoir), but you have to be farm assured to send them there. Never tried the market, but would like to know what they go for there. Maybe if you phoned Shrewsbury Market they might be able to give you an idea? They are pretty good there and Dexters do go th...

Re: Old beef?
At our local cull abattoir, a small Dexter cow would get £150-200. Something big will get £500-600. An average non-short Dexter say around £350? Those prices are 1-2 years old, probably better now, not sure.

Re: Blind Calf
I've heard of people bringing up blind lambs and amazed at how they get around and seem to know where everything is. BUT, do you (or a child) really want to be anywhere near a 300-400kg beast that can't see? If the problem is incurable, I'd personally put it down even if it looked like it might mana...

Here's a direct link to the Dexter catalogue, maybe that'll work?
Edited … Just removed the direct link because it's been used for something else.

Re: Weights explained
I've got stats from over 100 Dexters from a number of farms. Deadweight to liveweight averaged 53%, with very little variation. Boned Out to Deadweight averaged 61% with a lot of variation ranging from 52% to nearly 70% for a bull. But mainly, they were around the 61%. Average Boned Out to Liveweigh...

That was who my £600 quote was from . They are generally good though, been with them for some years now.JohnnyP wrote:Farmers & Mercantile? - we use them for third party insurance on our herd.

Re: Does anyone else feel like they are on the ropes?
Tough luck mac, that's a terrible story. Can't say we've had anything quite as bad but did have a run of 4 dead calves, then nothing died for the next 200 or so. I assume it's BVD from what you are saying. Need to get shot of them and either vaccinate or go the bvd-free status route (no experince th...

Re: Insurance
I asked for a quote for our Stabiliser when we bought him, it came in at £600 (from memory so could well be wrong!). As he was £3,000 I did think about doing it for just the first year, but changed my mind and didn't go ahead. Seemed very expensive to me. But if the bull had been £6-8,000, I'd have ...

Re: Only birth notifying ....
We had one beast go down, but the thing that amazed me more than anything was the paperwork. It must have been 1/4" thick, letter after letter in tiny print. So I phoned Animal Health and told them that I was a bit dixxyleczic and couldn't read small print (both of which are true) so could they...

Re: Only birth notifying ....
So if an animal is birth notified and therefore included in the pedigree herd book, they are considered pedigree, whether fully registered or not (except steers). Is that correct? If you're in a TB area, then keeping them as bulls as long as possible could make a lot of sense? Sorry to hear about yo...

Re: Only birth notifying ....
Does birth notification, and being from pedigree parentage obviously, mean that the animal would be classified as pedigree for TB compensation purposes?

I could be Monica as I just sold my bull today. Can I come and have a look? We're not far from you. PM me if OK. I will know whether I've sold by early next week.

Re: Only birth notifying ....
That's precisely the situation I came to quite a few years back now, and we haven't looked back. We went totally non-pedigree and didn't even birth notify. It didn't make any difference, in fact it opened up sales for both breeding and beef/stores. I do hate taking heifers (and ewe lambs) for slaugh...

Triple Suckler!
I lost 2 cows a few weeks ago to frothy bloat. Both left orphans about 3 months of age. So I put the creep feeder out and they did take a bit but not much at all, I was getting worried how they would cope. But I've been surprised at how well they were doing. Well now I know as I saw the two orphans ...

Re: Rose veal advice please...
Hi Stephanie, I don't know anything about it, but I know Freedom Food have a standard for it, so just read their website, which says this. "Freedom Food labelled British high welfare veal comes from calves reared to the RSPCA welfare standards, slaughtered between 6 and 12 months. They must hav...
