Jo Very interesting about your corossing xperinces. That is much the same as other people have said to me about the beef from crosses. Question: We the calvings from any of the crosses especially difficult and were the calves too big at birth in your opinion. Espceially the Belgium Blue cross. I am...

Peter Yes, I agree that it could be argued that beef is covered by the sentence you mention, but it has to be commercial from a beef producers point of view which cuts out the society from being involved, at least hands-on or financially. The charity status presumably goes back to the days of savin...

Firstly, sincere apologies, I wasn't complaining about not realising beef wasn't in the Objectives before I joined (but it does read like that), I was merely quoting chapter and verse without meaning anything untoward or having a side-swipe at anyone except myself. In fact, it clears things up for ...

Hello The Society doesn't have a brief to promote or even consider beef. Here is the Objective of the organisation taken from the Annual Return: "For the benefit of the public to ensure the preservation of the breed having characteristics worthy of preservation in the interests of research and...

Hello Re: the Australian Limousin-Dexter that won the beef show. I got a quick reply from Australia, it was very much an accident, young Limmy bull, young Dexter heifer, poor fence. The calf weighed 28kg, which is not that huge. But they said it was a difficult calving, so it may have been a big-fr...

Hello This topic is way over my head, but can I ask a question? I have a pedigree herd of 90 or so dexters with a pure red dexter bull, purchased from the Moonshine herd. I've had 20 calves by this bull in the last few months, and 9 out of 10 males are black, and 9 out of 10 females are red. Is tha...

Crossing is what beef farmers do. I am pedigree, but thinking of crossing because it seems that the result is a slightly larger animal (not huge as suggested), and that the calf is born small (I am told?) but grows larger, and that the result is a carcase that is more marketable to butchers, and st...
