Unfortunately, in breeding, a simple question often requires a complicated answer! When it comes to Dexters, it can be more so, since the bulldog gene can change the answer, which would otherwise apply. In the case of the polled animal, if it inherits the poll factor, it is going to inherit the hea...

I have been waiting for someone to ask, do you know whether they are short leg or long? The animal carrying the bulldog gene, has a very different head, because the missing gene influences the shape. It is possible to breed a broader head in the non- short, which most Dexter breeders will favour, b...

The Dexter breed, is still suffering from a breeding bottleneck in the late 1960’s. The breed nearly foundered, and the few remaining were quite largely crossed to avoid the bulldog calf. The numbers of pure-breds remaining was so small, that it virtually ruled out grading up, and cannot balance th...

I hope I didn’t leave the impression that more effort should be made in the choice of dam than the sire. The calf has to inherit half his genes from each parent. However, the aim is to breed a herd of cows, not bulls, and the bull on his own cannot give much indication of how his daughters are goin...

I love the idea of sueing Defra, Jo, even if it is only a dream. To get back to colour, a Dexter with white on the UNDERLINE is probably carrying pure Dexter genes. If it is on the flank, it is probably due to outside breeding. If you are going to take him out of the Herd book, you should logically...

If breeders are to be tempted to rear a bull of their own, now that the pre-movement testing is going to add to the expense of hiring, it would be as well if thought went into the choice of the young bull. Instead of simply choosing a nice looking bull calf, it would be worth choosing a male that s...

Just to up-date, my little bull passed his test, I now wait for my herd test next month! Thank you for your constructive contributions. Yes, Penny, I do have deer running over this farm, and during the worst of the Foot and Mouth, the Dexters were, for this reason, and much to their chagrin, ‘confi...

I was disappointed in the general response to this subject. I confess I was somewhat miffed at the reference to ’rare brindle’ Dexters, these appear in the Dexter where an original cross with a Jersey resurfaces in later generations, usually it remains hidden as long as the animal inherits the blac...
