Re: horse meat

With a burger costing 12p its a wonder there is any meat what so ever in it.

If ever there was a better bit of advertising for "BUY LOCAL".

Re: Minstry Inspection

Haha, i cant believe the French inspection was so thorough. we have a view here in the UK that the continentals are laid back and dont do all things we have to do. (well i do anyway) I think of the battery hen legislation and more so the sow stall ban, i thought we where the only ones that did all t...

Re: Wanted Ring Feeder

Just ordered an IAE sheep race set up. the basic races wont take any of the other fitments so i went for an all singing unit with a forcing pen, perhaps got carried away with a rush of blood. hopefully it will last. 1300 + VAT

Re: Round Feeder For Dexters

Good to see lots of baler twine in use Clive!! what would we do without it? use round feeders, with no problems. we also have a feed trailer, and a feed bin, which is basically a rectangle feeder. it will fit 2 bales in and has places for maybe 16 or so animals. to stop wastage, get you silage chopp...

Re: House cow

I sold a 10 year old cow with calf for milking. she was a great cow, machine or hand milk. i let her go for £650 because she was going to a very good home, the family have 8 children and a desperate need for milk! she was as good as a pet really. lots of people out there fancy a house cow, i feel ma...

Re: White fat

I think the whole crop wheat could be your answer! I doubt they would mix up a short dexter with any one elses carcass. where would it get you dna testing the other carcasses will be with their owners and you might end up with nothing. I do also find the colour of the fat varies, summer finished cat...

Re: Carcass Price ?

I heard the angus premium is nearer 45p that might explain the £3.90 price Clive quotes.

Morrisons paying 10p on shortorns and similar, natives will soon be paying their way! (if they dont already)

Re: Calves out in winter?

Bringing them in will risk pneumonia. calves best outdoors. keep verything fed and cold is no issue in this country.

i had a calf born outside in -14 c he lost the tips of his ears but was very fit and healthy.

the rain and mud is more of a problem like Clive says.

Re: wHAT ARE YOU DOING TO GET READY FOR WINTER?

Had our first case of staggers today! cant believe it.

it was in a housed first calver, never would have thought it. vet said they are expecting plenty of staggers with poor quality of silage out there.

so for the first time ever we have hi mag licks in the shed.

stay vigilent

Big herd getting bigger!

I had a visit from an Northern Irish Dexter man on Monday night. He cleared my butchery out of my redundant kit, which was quite a nice suprise! He was telling me had around 250 dexters on the ground at the moment. i said to him well you wont need any more off me next year. he replied, yes i will i ...

Re: Intramuscular Fat

These technical replies are very interesting, but to me the point is you used bulls at 18 and 22 months. unless adlib fed they will have little or no fat in my experience. i have nothing against bull beef and it looks like i will be trying some myself. i have a bull who we cant dna verify. aslong as...
