Calving!

Started calving last week slow and steady. But whilst feeding the cows out on the hill i noticed a cow who had clearly calved. fearing the worst i got back to the farm and went out on the bike to find what had happened. found a healthy little black beauty sat on his own. cow dutifully came over to c...

Re: Awful weather

Saw footage of the snow around galloway last night on scottish news. Livestock stuck in small pockets of clear ground surrounded by deep snow. Seeing it, you think there must be thousands of dead stock lieing under the drifts. We have very little snow but the easterly winds are brutal. it would be n...

Re: TB Disaster

Its just terrible, i just cant imagine what it must be like to live under the shadow of TB. Does it make you question keeping cattle? When our four yearly is due it sends me over the edge so every 60 days must be a killer. bring on the cull, but also surely a tb vaccine should surely be considered. ...

Re: Pedigree or Commercial

Apart from a few, nearly all my dangus have been sold as stores through the local market. they got reasonable money as 15 -18 month old 500 -660 each. i have had a couple through the butchery, but i cant give you facts. only the beef was good and sold well. i have about 30 of them just weaned, so i ...

Re: Weaned the 2012 crop today

Gave up with the cow on saturday morning. called out a neighbour with a suitable firearm to dispatch her.
if i could have got her back to base we could have given her time, but where she was was just terrible.

never mind

Re: Weaned the 2012 crop today

Sleepless night was not the worst of it. went out to the cows wednesday morning, saw a black shape stretched down alongside a fence, on quite a steep bank. went over and its a bl**dy cow. she must have slipped down the banking, and as she slipped her foot became stuck in the stock netting. she was h...

Weaned the 2012 crop today

I have taken advantage of this dry spell to wean all the cows. In my system i keep the calves on the cows until feb/march. then turn the cows out and keep the calves inside. we should calve april/may. It a good chance for me to see all the calves together and see what i have to sell for the year! i ...

Re: Pedigree or Commercial

Oh ahhh! Well i think you make of cattle want YOU want. As ever with our trials me and Clive are very close! The Angus is too big, too hard on the ground difficult for me to manage. The dexter is just a bit too small. i no longer want to breed just for my butchery. i need a bit of commercial size, s...
