Re: Zanfara boss cow

Behaviour is definitely from the sire's side, Hill Farm Thomas. Thomas jumped the fence once too often into the neighbour's field so had to go on a one way trip. All Clarissa's many other calves had her sweet nature and I ended up keeping Thomasina! On the plus side, all Thomasina's progeny and desc...

Zanfara boss cow

A rather late response to Saffy's request for more info on my boss cow. She is Zanfara Thomasina, born 7/2/05. She is my attempt to breed back to Doesmead bloodlines. So far has had fourteen calves, of which eleven have been heifers and the three bulls were all registered and worked. All have been e...

Re: Phillipa Laing RIP

That is sad news. She was indeed a very kind lady and most supportive when I started showing.

Re: Orphan Calf

See the thread "how much milk does an orphan calf need" from May 2018, it's a couple of pages down the list of topics. The heifer I was rearing then was weaned at 5 months on to grass. She had a super bull calf in March this year. She was offered sugar beet pellets as a baby, I've never ha...

Re: Cull cow

What livestock marts are in your area? I would look at the forthcoming sales and make enquiries. Up here (N. Yorks/Co. Durham/Northumberland) there are regular sales of cull, or Over Thirty Month (OTM), cattle. I used to book a haulier to take my culls to mart. Sadly he's now retired, so next time I...

Re: Woodmagic Petrel Ex91 22 years old today

What a splendid cow. Though my heart sinks a little when I look at my boss cow and think we may have another 7 years together!

Re: List your ideas of things to do with your cows on Lock Down

Halter training is continuing with last year's heifers. Paul bought a sack of carrots before lockdown and has been coming a couple of times a week as his permitted hour of exercise. The field is next to the road so he can visit them at a safe distance from me.

Re: virtual agricultural show

Rosewood Glenkinchie and Zanfara Kathryn came 2nd in the Dual Purpose Breed Male & Female Pair class. Did anyone else here enter? It was an interesting experiment. Disappointed that only the Breed Champions were in the Grand Parade on the main part of the site. Very difficult to access the lives...

Re: Pleasure in difficult times

On Saturday, I put two heifers in a field where the 2019 ewe lambs have over wintered. This morning, I find the gate open and the gimmers and heifers in the next field with in-lamb ewes. The gimmers came rushing back, almost as if saying "It wasn't us, honest, the Dexters led us astray, we're g...

Guinea fowl

Yes, I know they're not Dexters. However, does anyone here keep them and have either spare birds or hatching eggs available? I was going to look for some at the local Fur & Feather sales but all are now cancelled.

York Auction Centre sales cancelled

Just had the email notification that all planned sales at YAC are now cancelled, which includes the Spring Rare Breeds Sale. This site is going to become even more invaluable for advertising stock.
