Re: A dead 4 months calf

Clive, I have just ordered another lot of replacement tags from Fearings because they do come out and break. I have a bull calf that has lost both of his. The latest one broke when he rubbed his head on a wire fence - I found the bits of that one. But I can't work out how he lost the other. I found ...

Re: How much water does a Dexter drink?

The manufacturers of Grundfos pumps produce a guide for designing water systems. Their figure is that a cow uses 40 litres each day. That sounds quite low to me, especially for a dairy cow, but it may not be too far off to use as an average for a mixed bunch of Dexters. But then when did any Dexter ...

Re: Muck Spreading

Last year, I had hoped to leave it in a muck heap to compost for a while in the hope that any nasties in the muck would break down with some time. It didn't happen because of lack of time and availability of equipment, so it was spread onto a field that was then cut for silage. We got two pretty goo...

Re: Silage

The last couple of years has taught everyone that they need to take advantage of every opportunity to make forage. Last year people were making silage well into October. This year, some grass is going to seed already, so if they can't graze it, they need to cut and conserve it, its too valuable to w...

Re: Calling the vet to a calving

Hi Saffy, Chris is much more likely to get good treatment from your vet than from your GP. Our neighbour always used to call the vet for any medical problem - human or animal. I'm sure its against some code of conduct or other, but it kept him happy and healthy.

I took a train to London today and the article covered a full page of the free Metro newspaper. The photograph of the Dexter steer was reduced to a thumbprint at the bottom of the page, the main photograph was of the chef with a side of beef on his shoulder.

I apologise for my prejudice against Chinese and Indian equipment. If you can find a reliable supplier its probably Ok, but I have experienced failures from suppliers from both countries who claimed their equipment was made to international standards when it wasn't. Having said that, I've sued a su...

Ben, I'd be happy to provide any advice or help on farm machinery and also help with training. I spent 15 years designing and testing farm machinery including balers and bale handling systems. Now I investigate machinery problems for insurance companies and lawyers. I have my own set of equipment, ...

Maybe video games are the answer? Last week, I was using my laptop to read a fault code on the pick-up truck which was parked by the feed barrier. I was squatting by the open car door with the laptop on the driver's seat. I felt heavy breathing in my ears and looked round to find 3 Dexters looking ...

To answer your question Colin, I paid £62 abattoir costs, so the £3.35 per kg reduces to £3.02 per kg.

I've just sold a steer to a local butcher for £3.35/kg. It was his first Dexter. He told some of his regular customers that he was getting Dexter Beef in and they placed advanced orders before the beef was mature. His cutter commented to me that there was much less waste than with the continental b...

This subject has been discussed recently on the farming forum website. One alternative idea came up. Collect all your plastic wrap together. Stuff it into a livestock trailer and deliver it to the local waste depot. Declare it as trade waste and pay £25 per ton to drop it off. Its a whole lot cheap...

I picked up one a couple of days ago, and the design seems to have changed, the candle was supported by a couple of pieces of string, not wire. Regardless, I'd rather they didn't use the things at all.

I also use a sheep hurdle to form a funnel into the crush. BUT - I place one on its end, so it is tall and narrow. I also use a bucket with a few beet nuts in it and that seems to get them into the crush every time. Dexters can be bribed - when it suits them.

Our vet now says that he thinks its a sprain that should heal in 10 to 14 days. She does appear to be slightly improved today. She was in the same field as the bull, but this happened when she was in a separate field.
