Veal is a contraversial issue on both sides of the ocean it would seem; and so it should be, as with all livestock raising. The fact is that modern 'industrial' livestock husbandry has been wrong, disrespectful of the animal and in many cases cruel. People should be aware of how the animals that th...

Hi we are going to veal our first Dexter bull calf next month and I want to see how it is going to be. We usually veal a 'drop' calf a few times a year and although the calf has access to mineral, hay/grass and a tiny bit of grain the last month, we feed a lot of whole milk and so far the veal has ...

Hi Minnie; I use Dexter milk and I also use Jersey milk, sometimes in a blend if I am making a certain type of cheese, washed curd for instance, but each milk really has its own merits for certain types of cheese. Dexter milk has small fat globules, as you said, and this is what I use for cheese th...

Hi kathy; It may have been a long birth and he may be a bit oxygen deprived and if you can get hold of a calf tuber from the vet or feed store, then go for it. It is much easier to tube a calf than a lamb because the the tube is rigid with a ball on the end. Put it down his throat slowly, with the ...

My girls are a bit small for the 'kicker' that I purchased at a dairy barn auction but I find that a rope tied just in front of udder and hips, with a clove hitch, works just as well. Of course that is assuming they are staunchioned first! :)

Hi guys; Are you sure that we are all talking about ringworm? Or is every fungal skin irritation being called 'ringworm'? Had a swing vet out last year at this time who told me that the problem with a couple of my cows was a fungal irritation, similar to 'rain rot' in horses and anti-dandruff shamp...

Hi Clive, I'd have to find out but we are not a large group by any means. For instance, we, Den and I, only have four Dexter cows and I think that other than some of the larger herds out west, we are pretty representative of the herd size. Well under 10 cows anyway. Liz

Unfortunately Margaret, that is not the case in Canada. As Marion said, only 14 calves in the herdbook from last year were from AI bulls of the 268 that were registered. Carol di do a lot for Dexters in Canada, Australia and the United States. She promoted both her Hiyu bulls and others that she th...

This is an interesting discussion. I have also been 'wondering' about whether we are sold a bill of goods with wormers! My sheep were not resistant and actually would die if not wormed about three times in pasture season here; 5 months in my part of Canada. My adult cows seem to be extremely resist...

Since I use AI only, I tend to watch my girls very closely re bulling. Usually after calving they cycle at around the two week mark although I had one start on her 9th day, part horse I think :p and a first time calver at about three weeks. I don't usually usually try AIing until the heat that woul...
