I have to say I am very sad that in a whole week no one else has seen fit to contribute to this thread. Is no one interested, or are you all to scared to put your head above the parapet?
Come on, lets have some thoughts.

Re: UK Registry requirements
In about 2011 I was part of a small group tasked with looking into this. One breeder had had two calves from related cows abort abnormal calves in two successive years. A so called genetics advisor had advised the lady to bury the first calf, then the next year did a "post mortem" although...

Re: linear assessment price premium
I look on linear assessment more as an independent assessment of my herd, showing me the strengths and weaknesses. I have not bought in any females for 17 years, and have only used two bought in bulls neither of which was assessed when I bought them. However I would be looking or hoping to look at t...

Re: Beef steer stats
All of mine are non-shorts, but my figures are more in line with your shorts Mark. Maybe not surprising since I have been trying to produce non bulldog carriers the size of short legged Dexters for about 20 years. Mine are totally grass fed and I suspect a lot poorer grass than most. No fertiliser, ...

Let us hope that council respects the overwhelming majority of the vote on this today.

Current state of the Dexter Cattle Society
Current state of Dexter Cattle Society Many members of the Dexter Cattle Society are well aware that there is considerable discontent in our Society at present. There are a number of reasons for this, and there are a number of ways in which this is showing itself. Many of you will know that I have b...

Re: Dexter Beef Breakdown
Most of mine sells in boxes, even mix of cuts except fillet, 7 or 8kg in a box. I can get up to 12 boxes from my bigger ones which are about 150 kg hanging weight, less for smaller. At the moment £110 a box - maybe average £1200 per beast, less £300 killing and butchering. I think Harvey Hamlet also...

Re: D. C. S. Council Criticism
Three ex council members, one of whom is past Chairman of council, another is ex vice president (an office no longer used by DCS) and an honorary life member, have put their names to cricicism. But it is not possible to have a balanced discussion on this board as one of the three has been barred fro...

Re: Hanging Up Wellies
Hello Jacqui, sadly I realised that was not really a likely option, I am just sad to see anyone stopping keeping Dexters especially after such a long time and such active involvement with the breed as you have had. It must have been a difficult decision, I hope all goes smoothly.

Re: Hanging Up Wellies
Very sorry to hear that, could you not just change to a smaller size of wellies? I do hope your input into the general affairs of the Dexter breed will continue.

I wish I had known that years ago, mine are now in mid thirties and still not halter trained.

Re: Free for all suckling
I don't think it is common unless cows are trained to multisuckle. Some will just not entertain this at all. I lost a cow due to eating plastic and twine this year, and when she was ill I realised it was not going well. Her mother who had a new calf at foot came into the area where I was nursing the...
