I'd also like to know how many years I should keep a cow who hasn't yet produced a calf. She was very skinny when we got her, but has filled out nicely now. She's over three years of age. Should I give up and cull her, or try another year? She spent 2 months with the bull.

If its done by a vet, the end result is quite acceptable. We had a brother and sister done very soon after they arrived on our farm. That was nearly two years ago and the tops of their heads look quite tidy. So go ahead and get them dehorned if you'd like to. It won't spoil their appearance.

Andy, you should see some of the New Zealand publications. The Chondrodyplasia problem is in almost every issue of anything to do with Dexters. Interestingly though, the 'International version' of the C gene (or type 1) isn't all that common in NZ I don't think. I've tested all our breeding age cow...

Duncan, you can get natural polling in dairy animals. We had one family line in our Pedigree Friesian herd of 120 cows, that was polled. The original cow came from another herd, but all her offspring were all polled. They were good milkers too. So it is possible to find polling turning up, albeit r...

At last we have a Discussion Board again. I missed reading all the excellant information and discussions on the old one. This new Board is probably easier to use, although not being as computer literate as my children, I don't know how to access all its features. Its definitely nicer not getting th...
