Re: Chondrodysplasia

I would avoid Dexters if you are growing so many trees. Dexters are true foragers and will eat anything that they consider tasty. This is good for weed control (only goats and donkeys do a more thorough job), but it's not good for trees that you want to keep. Our fruit trees got halved in height, wh...

Re: Polled Animals

Clive, I don't think the colour of the animal has any bearing on the horn or poll genes of the animal. If the animal has 1 poll gene, it won't grow horns. As the poll gene prevents any horn growth. If the second gene is for horns, then it can of course, pass on that horn gene to it's offspring. Scur...

Yes, I had presumed the Red gene came from the Dam's side, but it is interesting to know that there was a red gene on the sire's side as well. I was very surprised when the Dun coloured calf turned up, as the last Dun animal in his pedigree was 5 generations before. Its amazing how long a gene can ...

Using the information from the Australian website, I've worked out that one of the most well used semen in NZ is a bull with a carrier in his pedigree. So its highly possible that most of the herds in NZ could have carriers of PHA in them. In our own herd, all 3 of our bulls have a carrier in their...

Thanks for that Margaret. I'll make a note on the pedigree, so I know that it comes through our bull's Sire as well as his dam. One of them must have passed on the gene.

I'm trying to work out where the red gene came from in a bull that we had. I know that his dam was red, but I also wondered if his Sire carried red as well? So can anyone tell me if Hiyu Salty Rambler carried Red? He was registered in the U.S., but as so many international Dexter breeders take part...

I can't imagine coping with snow. We never get it here in the Northern part of NZ, but the Southern part of NZ got hit with a real dumping in late Spring this year and the farmers down that way lost a lot of their lambs. The worst snowfall for that area in a very many number of years. Hope the wate...

Hang on in there Vicki. I know you're going through a bad time at the moment. Hope all your cattle have been taken out of harm's way. Keep safe.

Ann, I love the photo. :)

The New Year sees our calves at 2-3 months of age and growing well. We had some much needed rain just before Christmas, so the grass is growing nicely and the spectre of drought has been driven further towards the horizon. 2011 is looking good so far. The cows being kept for breeding have all been ...

Yes, exactly. Which is why I don't understand why the Americans had so much trouble diferentiating between the two colours? Did they not know about the Dun as a colour variation in the Dexter, when they first started breeding them?

We have both Dexters and Polled Wiltshire sheep. The Wiltshires are very low maintenance. In fact, its a toss up as to whether I get them into the yards more, to do something with them, than I do with the Dexters? I know I can sell them in equal numbers (if the market is bouyant) to small block own...

I've always thought that you can get two or three shades of Red. The deep red, the orange red and the dark red with dark points like the nose.

Dun is an altogether different colour I thought. It can be pale through to dark dun, but it doesn't look anything like red.

Ah, thankyou. That covers it. I have used the American on-line pedigree. Its very good. But I presumed that We Gaelic was a UK stud, so didn't think to use it this time. Is the reason that Thistledown is classed as Red/Dun because people found it hard to tell the difference between the colours? Or ...

Thankyou for that Duncan. Thistledown isn't in the list, so does that mean that she might not have been registered?
