Farmers over here have taken to putting up a sign at their entrance gate, warning that the person was entering a 'multiple hazzards' area and that entry was at their own risk. Any visitors are advised to check with the owner of the possible dangers (stock, water reservores, other water hazzards and...

DNA profiling will help you find out if the bull you thought was the sire, actually is the sire. The NZ Dexter Society has now made it compulsory to file the DNA profile of any bull calf being registered, before it can have full registration. This way, if there is a query as to the sire, the profil...

Ours don't seem to cycle until a couple of months after calving, depending on the weather. One Spring it was so wet all the time (you know that kind of Spring) that it was common amongst a lot of the farms up our way, especially the dairy farms, for the cows to start cycling late that year. The sun...

Just wanted to let you know Clive, we received the DVD in the mail today and watched the two programmes this evening. Caroline's beef and mushroom pie looked great, even if she was a bit nervous about the pastry. The Menu on the 'Great British Menu' looked incredibly complicated. I'm amazed they pu...

I've found its easier on the cow, if you leave the dead calf with her for a couple of days, so that she can get used to the fact that her calf has died. Poor things. They need time to grieve.

I agree. Hand feeding bull calves isn't wise. Leaving the feed in a trough or hay on the ground, so that you can distance yourself from the 'people means feed' idea, is a safer way to go.

Congratulations Di. I hope calving goes smoothly for you and at least one of the calves is a heifer. :)

It would be nice to be able to 'finish' beef. If only we had the suitable grazing. Our best market is for weaner steers and if the steers aren't long-legged (non-carriers) they won't sell at the sales yards. The agents suggest that we don't try. Better to sell short-legs privately. Commercially, it...

Have you had a wet Winter? I've talked to a number of farmers who have had just the same, from a number of their cows. I myself had a cow who pushed her calf into the world and had no interest in it thereafter. We ended up hand-raising it. The previous year she had reared her bull calf fine. The on...

A lack of copper can bring about that brownish colour SteveM. A few years ago, I had to give our 1 year old heifers a copper salt block, as they all had a brown tinge to their coat. They turned shiny black in time and their conception rates were fine. Making sure your stock has access to a good mul...

We find that we can get good prices for our long-legged (6-7 month olds) weaners at the salesyards, if we time the selling at the right time of the year. The sales are weekly, but there are also special weaner sales a couple of times a year. We got just over $2 per kilo for our four weaner steers. ...

She's looking good now. Is it worth tying the mother up and making her feed the calf twice a day? She may eventually let the calf feed on her own. After her hormones settle down, her mothering skills might improve. We had a heifer that treated her calf like a punching bag as well, she came right an...
