Re: Dexter Meat Prices
No simple answers, much depends where you live and who you are selling to. Where you are going to have your beef cut and how they are going to pack and label it (if indeed they are). What are your competition selling it for - not just those with Dexter?

Re: New Toy
To be fair Clive you can't justify the cost of anything associated with livestock. Since I do not have any scales to weigh my sheep or pigs either I hope that this is going to help me make less of a loss.

Re: New Toy
Based on my figure they are fairly typical except your non-short looks a bit light unless he's particularly small. We weigh very occasionally at a local weigh bridge, in batches though, not individuals. I think you have to deduct the birth weight before calculating weight gain, I do anyhow. 0.47 kg...

New Toy
Just purchased my cows a present - some livestock scales. I have weighed the first two victims - two uncastrated males 1. Aged 410 days, weight gain 234 kgs (0.570 kgs per day) Non-short 2. Aged 342 days, weight gain 208 kgs (0.608 kgs per day) Short. Not had the luxury of this before so do not know...

Re: Average age for heifers to calve
Hi Anna We have in the past aimed to calve down our heifers at 2 years of age especially the non-shorts but may delay this for a few months with the shorts if they have not grown sufficiently. I have to keep an eye on their condition through lactation and occasionally wean early (5 months) if I thin...

Re: lots of cattle for sale
Thanks for those prices Clive. What I was after was the rationale behind the price. The responses I have had so far are interesting.

Re: lots of cattle for sale
I am doing some research for the next DCS Bulletin and would be very interested to hear from breeders and others selling Dexters on how they determine the prices they charge for their stock. All replies will be treated in the strictest confidence. You can e-mail me at alvecoteherd@btinternet.com Man...

Smallholder and Garden Festival
Is on this weekend (21st and 22nd May) at the RWAS, Builth Wells. The West Wales Dexter group will be organising the Dexter stand in the cattle building. For the first time, they are putting on classes for cattle. If you haven't been before, it is well worth a visit with lots to see indoors so it do...

Insurance for Beef Producers
Just a quick mention for Direct Line Home Business Insurance. Had a brilliant quote of £89.38 for public/product liabilities (5 million) and contents for my butchery with lots of extras thrown in for free. After receiving some really daft quotes thought I would have to pack it all in. So if anyone i...

Re: Genus Charges
Many thanks Ann. I am not contemplating using their services as a run my own bulls however, I often get queries regarding the costs of AI in comparision to hiring a bull.

Genus Charges
Could anyone tell me what the current charges are for AI i.e monthly storage and call out? If you order straws from the DCS (which are held at other Genus centres) do they charge you to transfer the straws to your local centre?

Re: Foot Trimming
Anyone with a Dexter size foot trimming crush could make a fortune ..... Any ideas? Natasha :? No, Nat they couldn't. Rountine foot care is just not on the agenda for the majority of Dexter owners, so they wait until there is a welfare issue before summoning assistance. Lots of Dexters are not well...

You do not mention what sort of halter you are using Tinkerbell. I have found that leather ones with a chain underneath the chin aids control with some persistant pullers - working on the Barbara Woodhouse idea of a couple a sharp jerks when they attempt to make a run for it.
