We had our annual TB test last week and our vet also commented on how easy it was to deal with our animals. Apparently Dexters had quite a bad name for being difficult at our Vet's. I'm trying to correct that opinion.

I have a 3 month old heifer calf that has suddenly developed a very stiff gait. She has been very active since birth and I just moved the cattle to a new field. She joined everyone else in a mad gallop around the field. Within a day, she started walking with a very hunched back and stiff hind legs....

A local contractor who trims feet told me that whenever he sees someone with a piece of blue pipe, he insists that they go away and do something else whilst he deals with his job calmly.

From speaking to Steve in the last week or so, they use 4 or 5 nominated abattoirs in England and then handle carcases.

I agree with Clive. I tried it with our guy, but the £90 vets fee for a pre movement TB test takes away any real chance of making money.

I'm sorry but after visiting the Dairy Event at its new home in the NEC only a couple of weeks ago, I just don't buy the explanations of the RASE and the Smithfield Club. If you visit any of the specialist farm shows, they are well attended by people doing business. In my work, I regularly meet peo...

Over the weekend, as I was struggling in the rain to unload a load of straw into the barn, I noticed that most of our Dexters were supervising my progress from their nice dry shed. Which is the intelligent being and which one is the dumb animal? :)

Cattle usually won't eat green ragwort because the taste is too bitter, but when it dries it becomes more palatable and dangerous. I'm constantly digging the stuff out because our land borders some paddocks rented by "clueless horse owners" who tell me they like the pretty yellow flowers....

Its a common problem with tractors. Years ago when I used to design them, I investigated warranty problems. One of them was that brake linings failed and produced cast iron dust that clogged the oil system and stopped the power steering from working. So the first symptom that your brakes were no go...

Another thought about spraying weeds. Several companies supply small electric powered sprayers to sit on the back of a quad bike. They could equally well be used on a pick-up or a land-rover if you don't have a quad. I got mine on E-Bay, my main equipment supplier!

I've used Cotswold seeds, order on the internet and very quick delivery. I don't think they do fert coatings though, Oliver seeds do that. May be worth sub-dividing your pasture with an electric fence to allow one area to grow a little whilst the stock is grazing another area. I was given a tip for...

I remember a comment from the Crossgar meats meeting. If you intend to sell for beef, most buyers strongly prefer dehorned cattle because of the serious amount of damage that horned animals can do to each other. The wastage due to horn bruising can be very significant.

I investigate claims for insurance companies and I'm afraid that I can add an even worse tale. Three or four years ago, someone changed a tractor battery in the field and failed to pick up the old one. It was picked up by a Hesston big baler, and packed into a straw bale. The bale was sold to anoth...

I've used Dow agrochemicals Forefront. It kills docks, thistles and nettles without killing the grass, but it also kills clover. It prevents most of the nuisance weeds from coming back for a couple of years. Again you have to keep stock out of the field for 6/7 days. Oops!. I've just read that Fore...
