I bought a cow a number of years ago which wouldn't put on weight and we couldn't get her in calf. In fact I started posted on this forum in the hope of gaining answers as to what to do. In then end, she finally calved in her 4th year and has failed to get in calf ever since. I'm glad I persevered ...

New NZ research has decided that A2 milk is no better than A1 milk for the health of people drinking it. The government didn't want children to stop drinking milk, because the benefits outweighed the possible bad effects. That hasn't stopped people from buying A2 milk or going to goat's milk, Soy m...

I'm still aiming for beefiness. ;) It seems to take a lot of generations to achieve, when you start with dairy foundation cows. On the plus side, the heifers have nice udders. Very handy for growing a good beefy calf. :)

I think you might be missing out, by not giving the good looking heifers from other lines a try though. You never know what treasure might turn up from mating two not-so-good parents. I've had some lovely surprises over the years and have also seen some very disappointing calves from good looking p...

I remember Duncan had plenty of grass in the paddock of some Dexters he posted a picture of on here. So his cattle can't be underfed. :;):

There is enough spread in the Dexter genetics that people can choose animals of whatever height they need, to produce the type of calves they want to breed, which will sell in the market for which they are aimed. Our Grade 1 - 3 cows produced big enough calves from two of our bulls (1 carrier and t...

What lovely photos Ann and Saffy. Today was Boxing Day for us. Shopping for bargins at the Boxing Day Sales. I guess every country is having bigs sales in the retail sector this year. We didn't find a long coat for our Son who's going to Canada next month to work, though. Its very hard to find such...

Well, our Christmas Tree is up and mostly decorated. The house tidying before the arrival of the extended family tomorrow (it is tomorrow for us in NZ), hasn't began in earnest yet, but the Christmas ham is cooked. We have ours cold with salads, here in NZ as the Summer temperatures make a hot meal...

One of our cows turned out to carry red. Even though the last red animal in her bloodline was three generations ago. She had three black bull calves in a row, so I never gave it a thought that she might carry red. But for the last two years, she has produced a red calf from a bull which also carrie...

Bye the way, I've got 8 heifer calves this year ! The drought has broken. 50% of each sex and still 3-4 cows yet to calve. You can't get fairer than that. :D

The software won't let me edit my own post. So I'll add here, that the short non-carrier bull I mentioned in my previous post, is 43 inches at hip height at the age of 2 years. He comes from a family of non-carriers that fit within the breed height standard and they have, over the years, consistant...

We've got both Dexters and Devon Black Pigs. Great combination. :) I have a suggestion for you, regarding this whole Chodrodysplasia issue. See if you can get rid of the whole leg length labelling completely and just use carrier and non-carrier. Its so much easier. Then all the new owner needs to k...
