My father managed his herd of 90 Freisians for years by paddock grazing them with permanent electric fences.
My Dexters are used to electric fencing to the extent that I often use a piece of electric tape to prevent straying when I move them from field to field.
If I want them in the barn, when they would rather be outside, I tie a length to the gate and hold the other end whilst I walk around them.
Usually works a treat.
