overall average, 2103 £450, overall average 2012 £474


Mine, lots 49, 58, 59, and 60, were 500,500,500 and 490. I had set £500 as reserve price worked out from possible beef sales if I took them home, and I would not have let the first one go at £490 but it seemed petty to take the last one home for the sake of £10. During the sale I think vendors were feeling a bit under seige, probably due to the bulls not selling at the beginning. However looking at the averages it was not as poor a sale as it seemed to be at the time! Some were taken out unsold and I fully agree with that, as I say mine definitely would have been taken home if the £500 was not achieved. The Burnside heifers all went to different owners, 3 of them new herds being formed, and one to a well known contributor to this list. I wish them all well with their new purchase, and look forward to hearing updates.

Thanks for the prices both and as you say Duncan, they don't look as bad [as I was imagining].

Steers not being forward seems to be a recurring theme - the last York sale had a lot of steers entered but in the end only a handful were forward, I guess because the steer buyers get the catalogues and arrange private deals.

Does anyone have any actual prices from the sale please, in particular what did Planetree Themis (photo on for sale section of this site) make? She looks stunning in the photo.

£1000 to £1,200 gns seems better but of course, I am only working from a photograph and haven't looked at the breeding or family members.

I got £850 culling a small non-short bull last year. And prices are better now! Surely the lowest price for any half-decent bull should be over £1000?

Aye, but you could get a cow more than twice the size for that, and Dexter beef doesn't fetch twice the price, yet.

ETA - I was also working on the information that she's a five year old + cow that's only produced one calf and isn't due again before April, so almost three years from producing a return from beef, which gives a return of £99 if the purchase price was invested in the best bank account (5% AER).

I have always thought that the word average should really come with a health warning - while prices achieved for stock sold may not be dramatically lower than last year at Carlisle if memory serves correct only 28 out of 40 animals forward sold through the ring or a clearance rate of 70% - does anyone know how that compares to last year?
