Brown Dexter Calf

Post by Malkin Dexters »

Hi All,

I'm hoping some of you experienced members can/advise help me.

My 6 year old Black pedigree Dexter cow (Lily) calved three weeks ago to a lovely short 'brown' heifer. She ran with a black dexter bull in December.

As the photos show the calf is dark brown - is there a chance this will become a red ?

Lily has thrown a red calve before, last years was a non short black.

was just wondering out of curiosity really.

That's a black calf to me. Some seem to have a red tinge. I can;t recall ever having one like that, which turned red.

Quite a lot of black calves are this colour when they are born, and they often end up the darkest black.

Definitely a black, but I did once have a perfectly normal black animal that turned a medium light dun at about 3 months of age, but never had one turn red at a later date.
