As all this years calves have been heifers and following a run of mostly heifers in previous years I checked the herd register and found that of the last 20 calves born, 16 were females and 4 were bull calves. Prior to this the ratio was about 50/50. This group of calves were sired by 4 different bulls. Just wondered if other breeders cattle had produced such a high proportion of either Male or female calves.

Over a 30 year period I have had amost twice as many bull calves as heifers.

This spring out of 12 I only had 3 heifers, in the past I have had a run of 9 bull calves on the trot but never a run of heifers...very odd.

When I first started and wanted to build up the herd we had a run of 75% bulls, then when I wanted steers for beef they were all heifers. Now I'm beefing more heifers it's not so much of a problem but it seems that you always seem to get what you don't want...
