Hi Marg: easy! dun bull was probably black/red at the base colour locus and dun/dun at TRP1 locus; black cow was probably black/red also, but didn't carry the dun (well, it's actually brown) gene.
Calf would have been red/red and carrying ONE dun gene at the other locus. Notice i'm not getting into whether it was recessive red or wild red, by the way.
For your info, as I understand it, so far the only other breed to be homo wild and red is the Tarentaise. Now I'm waiting for some wag to claim that wild red Dexters are misregistered crosses from Tarentaise......
Don't have any info on Murray Grey. I understand they are a cross between Angus and Shorthorn or that there were several genetic sources for the colour (not all MG's descend from the same animal) but don't know for sure. I'll pass your comments along to Sheila when she's back from sabbatical, and let you know what I find out.
