Hi Kathleen:

I'm not usually at this site, so perhaps if you want replies, you should email me direct. I'm so illiterate I can't figure out how to access your email address from this site, maybe you could clue me in?

I'm not sure I understand the question: well, dun IS covered by the red, if both loci are homo for those two colours. Otherwise, you get the base colour if the brown locus is heterozygous.

I'll pass on your comments to sheila, but I know I asked her about MG prior to the Congress when I knew I would be in the home of the MG and might get some questions. We don't have much MG here, and I think their colour is a whole other kettle of fish, so to speak, with different loci involved. I know she did tell me there are many pattern loci that affect colour, like dorsal stripe, brindle, mealy noses, dilutes, etc. and I don't think she has done any work on MG. The reason we got lucky with the Dexter brown gene is that it is the same gene as is found in dogs and Sheila was working on them and added Dexters to the search when it looked like we didn't have a dilute causing the dun colour. regards, carol.
