In NZ, working out whether the calf is Red or Dun, doesn't seem to be a big problem for breeders, that I have heard. When I had a Red calf with a black nose and was new to Dexters and their colour variations. I sent pictures to our Herd Registrar by email and He was able to decide for me. We regist...

Hi Chriskirise, how is your calf getting on? We had a calf born Easter 2004 which was 21.5 inches high and weighed 26 pounds (13kgs). He was the same size at 1 month old, as a heifer who was born a month after him. The first month was a struggle to keep him alive, but once he got past his initial p...

So why are there different shades of Dun or Red? As in humans, where different people produce different amounts of melanin in their skin, does the amount of eumelanin or phaeomelanin produced by each individual animal, decide what shade of Red or Dun that particular animal is? Also, can one animal ...

Yes, the North Island has some reasonably big hills (mountains too) as well, if you would prefer to live in a warmer climate. Waikato land isn't necessarily cheaper either. It's some of the best farming land in NZ. Travelling around for a while is a really good way of finding an area that you just ...

PeterO, there is an email service that is available to anyone who would like to receive it. 'Dial-a-Dexter' is a list sent out every 6 weeks (I think) containing all the animals that are for sale or lease, that month. It's a really good way of keeping up with the current pricing trends of Dexters o...

Another up-date Duncan. The cow in question presented us with a lovely sized heifer calf today. I wasn't expecting it until June or later as that was our vet's estimate last month, when He was doing the pregnancy testing. Anyway, the calf's lovely and strong and healthy. Black with white patches on...
