Re: Brexit...what next?

Since brexit was announced we've seen sales rise by 100% year on year & many ex-vegans looking for a quality product. I always think a threat to food is good for us producing quality as any shock to the system makes people less complacent with the supermarkets.

Re: Poor Sale Prices York

I doubt there are many herds in the country turning a profit, even with the most well bred, well handled stock there is a time factor to consider and time is one of the biggest costs in farming, along with land.

Dexters on DVD

If anyone is looking for a Dexter related Christmas present there was some good footage of our herd featured on the 'Wild Britain' series (episode 5; Countryside), but it's an excellent production of wildlife filming too;

Re: York sale

I also wonder if steers should be sold first, rather than last? As a buyer it's a gamble whether you buy heifers for beef or wait until the steers come up. If other bidders are anything like me they'll hold back on bidding on heifers in case they fill their trailer/empty the budget before getting to...

Re: York sale

Good points about handling and it was nice to see you again Ann (and sorry to miss you this time Louisa). I spend most of my time dealing with the meat these days so don't have much time for handling live ones but there's an easier way to up the value of youngstock - take the balls off the bulls and...

Re: York sale

Everyone seems to be looking for steers this time - I'm expecting a good trade, but hoping for a bad one :)

Re: Dexter Mentorship

I see a need for some good, honest advice - breed promotion needs this as I think many people see breed promotion as only mentioning the 'good bits' and omit any advice on dealing with the more challenging aspects of Dexters.

Re: Is it the end?

I run a facebook group for pedigree Dexter sales and had to change it to selling pedigree certificates when facebook changed but even now some ads get taken down automatically if you're not careful with the wording. It's ridiculous.

Re: Pasture for Life

Yes, rather a restrictive organisation that makes trade difficult - fine if you're rearing and finishing your own stock but there aren't many Dexter breeders in the scheme and even fewer selling stock. I steered clear of it for that reason, and the fact that the 'pasture' standards also includes bra...

Re: Is it the end?

I'm very much in the 'keep it' camp - Facebook is awful for livestock sales & discussion. If cost was an issue I'd happily contribute.
