Re: York sale

Unfortunately I didn't think about weighing him before I released him into the Ings with the others. I'm going to weigh them all when we gather them next time so I'll let you know. I really should get the weigh scale permanently set up somewhere.

Re: York sale

I bought two March 2017 steers for 195 each - for the benefit of anyone wanting to judge them for size I weighed them today and they were 198 & 224kg or 97p per kg

Re: Carlisle Sale

I have to say that Padison's calves don't half mature early & well - we've had a few through now and they're like little barrels.

Re: Youngstock/steers wanted

Thinking about the whole cash/beef conundrum - I'd be willing to take weaned calves and return their value in beef ready butchered, packed and labelled for the freezer - take the hassle of finishing and butchering out of it, if anyone was interested?

Not bad. I recall 92 being mentioned but it's not far off. I'll let him know. :)

Re: Is Linear Assessment linked to production and/or longevity?

Excellent news. Thank you Mark. :D Now I just hope I'm not disappointed by the score. :)

Youngstock/steers wanted

After a bad calving in 2017/18 I need a few more young steers/heifers to run on for beef - if you have anything that needs moving quickly and paying for slowly, let me know.

Re: a plug for our yorkshire neighbours

From the beef income alone you need about 300 head of Dexters on the ground at any one time, sold direct, for a single wage. The biggest killer is the cost of housing for both cattle and people - round here a lot of the farms have been sold off to non-farmers and the buildings no longer used for cat...

Re: a plug for our yorkshire neighbours

We get BPS on the home site (37 acres), and earn little enough to claim tax credits, but other than that, no Stewardship etc., just determination.

Re: a plug for our yorkshire neighbours

The photographer asked if I could hold a chicken, I had to insist that wasn't on message.

Re: Is Linear Assessment linked to production and/or longevity?

It was 7th February 2017 at 4pm, the assessor was called Malcolm Dykes? He didn't sign anything or do anything with the paperwork, but was rushing off to assess some shorthorns before it got dark.

Re: Is Linear Assessment linked to production and/or longevity?

I thought I'd revisit this thread, four years on, and pose a different question - will my bull live long enough to get his score? It's only been 15 months since he was assessed & tbh the lack of action from either the DCS or Holstein UK has not given me a lot of reassurance.

Thanks - it wasn't the shot I wanted but it was beginning to get dark so there wasn't a lot of opportunity.

Re: Outwintering? In for the winter?

We moved our out wintered steers to pastures new this afternoon, which involved a bit of ice road herding;

Re: Outwintering? In for the winter?

We've got 60 ish cows, the first 8 with calves, 150 in total, so should have about 190 after calving. The cows came in early this year - before the end of November, to start calving indoors. We only have two sheds so we can't physically fit everyone indoors although up until last year we did try to ...
