If American Dexters are losing the characteristics of the breed description, ACDA should help people to select better. DCS-judges are very knowledgeable and most of them would be delighted to help.
Try to breed foreward, not miscall Dexters for what went wrong in the past.

Re: Bulletin
As secretary from Society Holland Dexter I know how hard it is to produce an informative and readable, nice looking newsletter each 4 months. Chris Sparrow is producing a whole bulletin each 3 months. a tribute for her! About the contence I can't say much about it allready. It's not easy for me to r...

Re: Registration
We are running secretary Holland Dexter. We are told we can register Dexters from Holland and Belgium (Dutch language side). Otherwise should DCS not register Dexters in our region, but they do. We don't care, most are double registred. I don't think that we should register your animals in England. ...

Re: Do you have a longterm plan for your herd?
We live in the Netherlands and have a FarmShop since 1 year now. We need 10-20 steers a year. We have 9 hectare conservation pasture and 12 hectare commercial pasture. Over 5 years we like to have 20-30 Dexter cows (and 50 steers from calf to finisching). All should be free from Chrondo and not tall...

Re: Is Linear Assessment linked to production and/or longevi
Just a note, Australia, USA, South Africa and Holland all do linear assesment on dexters with great success, its not like we are doing something exclusive and revolutionary. Not at all, the article that started off this train of thought off was from the US, but I wonder if the other countries have ...

Re: Is Linear Assessment linked to production and/or longevi
Seriously though, those with good scores will tend to be more productive for a whole raft of reasons. good conformation will make more meat in relation to bone, good pelvic conformation will mean better calvings, good legs and feet will mean less lameness and arthritis. ... Duncan so lineair assesm...

Beefing 28 month steers vs 16 month bull
We were asking ourselfes why in the UK bulls are castrated and slaughtered at 28 months in stead of leaving them bulls and slaughter them a year earlier???? IMO steer 28 month: about 140 kg sellable meat. bull 16 months: about 100 kg sellable meat. You have to castrate and feed the animal 1 year for...

AI costs in Holland are: purchase: about 35 pound a straw (we try to get it lower by buy more with more buyers at the same time) transfer costs AI-station: 3,60 pound a straw first insemination costs: 4,60 pound visit: 8,40 pound storage of straws is really cheap in Holland! We pay 1 Euro (0,85pound...

Re: What do you call a group of cows?
In the Netherlands we call a group of cows a " KUDDE " I don't know if it has to do something with KYE, but it starts and ends with the same letter. Famous is the word "KUDDE GEDRAG" what means "catle behaviour". It's said when everyone walks the same direction because ...

Hello Nikola, About the duns: A dun bull will give only dun ofspring when mated to a dun (100% dun) (exeption: a dun with red recessive mated to a dun with red recessive will give 25% red) or mated to black or red with the dun-recessive gene (50% dun) So when you want dun coloured calves: use dun da...

Re: The problems in France
Here in Holland we have only 300 pedigree Dexters. There are some people (non-members) breeding and not registrate their calves by Holland Dexter. I think that are 5-10 breeders which bred max. 50 animals who could be pedigree if registrated at the right time. Each year a few of these become pedigre...

Re: Grazing pictures
This is a picture i took last week. Our cows in a 'nature' pasture. I think you call it conservation. This is the 3rd year: no fertilizer, no manure, only what the cows leave. Year zero we have mowed all, the year after a little stroke. Now it is what you see. This is what gouvernment wants: rough p...

Re: Heifer calf born 22nd of march 2013 - can it be bulling?
We had one from 3 months old. Covered by his sire. 2 weeks after that we injected the calf with Dinolytic, and slimy stuff came off. 2 weeks later we repeated the treatment. Then she was clean. Since then she is bulling every 3 weeks. We looking out for A.I. her (cobthorn Dannyboy) in a few weeks wh...
