Thanks for the explaination Duncan. I too am interested in breeding a non-carrier small Dexter. I believe that I have read that it can sometimes take a practiced eye to see the difference between a small non-carrier and a carrier. I would love to see some comparitive photos of Dexters that are non-...

The Galloway is a breed I have seen touted as being capable of being finished on grass. In the old days on the Canadian prairie everything [mostly Hereford and Angus] was grass finished, but they would be rounded up as three and four year olds to be sent for slaughter.

Ilsington Bramble looks to be a carrier. Is this so? I am curious because I understand that Duncan is breeding for a small non-carrier. Is this a bull from before that breeding program began?

But Kathy-why kill the cow? If she is a decent example of a Dexter, I'll trade you a nice little two year old bull ready for slaughter!

I can't see how it would be only an environmental effect. Animals with the same diet, same sun on their backs, free access to minerals and salt. Some have it and some don't. And then is it just a coincidence that the extra colouring happens to be the only other colours our Dexter come in?

I am wondering if the recessive colour genetics might be visable on our animals. Especially as calves I have noticed that some animals have a red tinge, most notably at the extremities, and some do not. Over time this shading will fade but still be in evidence in the long over coat of winter hair. ...
