Re: Square neater

Square Meater is a new breed developed in Australia in the 1990's by Rick Pisaturo. Plenty of info on the internet.

Dexter beef is amazing why try to cross it with another breed, especially a virtually unknown breed in the UK?

Good luck

That's interesting - just five minutes drive away from us. I'll have to make further enquiries.

Re: Meat for freezer

Our deadweight -v- saleable meat yields is 64%-65% consistently. We get this consistency because we are fortunate in being able to produce beef from our own animals only and not having to buy in, so from conception right through to the plate our animals are carefully monitored. The two butchers we s...

Re: Meat for freezer

Hi Fen Farm Dexters, I'd say your shin was included within the weight for stew. As for grading, our local abattoir does not grade even for the local butcher/farm shop we supply. However, when we sell through Traditional Breed Meat Marketing (TBMM) carcasses are graded and to achieve 'base' rate we n...

Don't forget Dexters still to be featured on Countryfile as filmed in Ireland a few weeks ago. Not sure when but hopefully very soon.

Re: More TV coverage

Fantastic coverage and with native grass fed beef generally in demand excellent timing. Hopefully prices at Carlisle for Dexters will improve on recent Dexter sales where prices have been far less than cull values. I suspect many of these cattle being sold at recent auctions are probably going for s...

Re: Weights explained

Our average of beef to sell is consistently 64% / 65% of deadweight, the info has been very helpful when working out monthly income from beef.

Re: Only birth notifying ....

Hi Clive, We're continuing with Dexters despite regular TB breakdowns, usually one every 12 months. Since December 2011 our cattle have had five whole herd tests, one severe interpretation whole herd test and a contiguous test on a small group last September. When the vet clips the neck to test, man...

Re: Only birth notifying ....

The following was in a TB South-West newsletter following the new rules in 2012: "For example, it will be made clear that; i) pedigree compensation rates are only payable for animals with breeding potential ; ii) only owners of animals with full pedigree certificates will receive pedigree compe...

Re: Only birth notifying ....

Unfortunately not so. The birth notified castrated males (steers) we have lost to TB, have been classed as commercial beef for the purposes of compensation. For a registered bull and registered cow a few years ago we received 'pedigree' compensation. Two months ago two fully registered cows, one wit...

Re: one year TB testing

Hi Natasha, If you have not had a TB breakdown you will have to test prior to moving off your holding and you will then have to move cattle within 60 days, so you would have to pre-movement test even if moving a short distance down the road. There may be links, but you will have to seek advice about...

Re: East of England Show 2013

Not good news at all. Has anyone seen the new regulations regarding TB which come into force in January 2013, as announced in last week's Farmers Guardian. Stricter movement rules and more counties coming into 12 monthly testing. I only wish the DEFRA, etc, would look at the possible cause of TB in ...

Re: Melton Catalogue 8th Sept

Not sure whether this will work on ringworm in cattle, but we once had a horse with 'German Pox' - very similar to ringworm. We had to scrub him down with Hibi Scrub, get the scabs soft, getting them off, so that when the Immaverol was used the next night the liquid got to the roots. It did clear up...
